Default Is Conor Benn worthy of a world title shot at Welterweight?

Conor Benn has found himself number one contender for WBC title for no real reason than his dad held the title many years ago. He has done nothing worthy of the number one position and if Devin Haney was WBC champion he would not go anywhere near him.

Conor could easily face Rolly, Crocker or even Haney in the interim but he will not.

    This is another WBC joke.

Britain's Conor Benn has been made the number one challenger to Mario Barrios' WBC welterweight world title.

Benn, 29, was ranked number four in the WBC and has not fought at the welterweight limit since February 2022.

The WBC made the announcement at its annual convention, but Barrios is expected to defend his belt against fellow American Ryan Garcia next.

"I'll be watching Barrios-Garcia closely," Benn said on social media.

"I want the winner early next year. I'll be coming for that belt and Britain will have a new world champion."

Barrios, 30, has drawn both of his WBC defences, including in July when he fought to a controversial draw with Manny Pacquiao.

Garcia, 27, is unranked by the WBC, having had one fight at welterweight, while Benn has not fought any of the contenders in the top 10 of the WBC welterweight rankings.

The Barrios-Garcia bout is expected to happen in February.

Benn had two fights with Chris Eubank Jr at middleweight this year, winning their rematch last month.

He has repeatedly said he intends to move back down to welterweight and said winning the WBC belt was his top priority.

he shouldn't be ranked at 147, when did he last fight at that weight?

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman on Monday, referencing Benn’s promoters, father, and the colours of the WBC title said “We appreciate Matchroom, please express to Conor and to Nigel our unbelievable gratitude for the way they have portrayed their dream of the green and gold,”

“That’s humbling. The way, ever since he conquered the glory of beating a very big middleweight as a welterweight, [he’s expressed] with such passion and loyalty his desire for the WBC [belt] makes us very proud.”

Ryan Garcia addressed the matter last week, telling Covers.com: “I don’t think he has a big presence in America, but I would be willing to go to the UK. I would definitely be willing to go to the UK to fight him. He seems like a fun match-up.

“He’s gonna come crazy and throw bombs all night and thinks he’s gonna overwhelm me, but he won’t. But I would love to fight him. I love fighting Eddie Hearn fighters, I don’t know why, I just love to beat them up.

“He just makes you want to beat his fighters up. It’s just the way he talks, the way he moves, I can’t wait to look at his face and say: ‘I did it again.’ That would bring so much joy to me, almost more than a championship title. I would be ecstatic just to see Eddie's face, sad and confused.”

All about money now and his name will sell.

We just have to accept that’s the way it is

These conventions seem corrupt and open to abuse from promoters/boxers who can influence delegates with hookers, drugs and money. It seems Eddie has got to Sulaiman and Terrence Crawford did not when Bud was stripped of the belt.

It will be telling what Conor does in the interim of the Barrios v Garcia contest. If he waits and not fight then he is not confident in himself about taking any risks. I can see him lose to either of them

Should Conor take a fight at the weight which he has not made in years and looks good then he can take great confidence in winning the title. He should take the latter approach if he is the real deal.

Rumour is that Benn is only rated number one if he doesn’t sue WBC for giving him the egg excuse. Conor makes out he wants the green belt because his dad had it but in reality it’s got the weakest champion.
