Default I need help of you Americans.

Okay I'm doing an essay on Kelly Pavlik for my English Assignment in college and the teacher said that I need to use American lexis (American words) in it so could you guys name me some common words used by Yanks which aren't used a lot in the UK, "Dude" for instance.

I need words to do with somebody saying "Stop chatting, bollocks" in American. "Calm Down, brother" would that count ?? haha

Please help Yanks, the essay is in for tommorow

"Quit talking shit" would be a proper replacement of "Stop chatting bollocks"

This is great. There needs to be a translation Thread for all of the forum. At times Its a little hard to decipher The verbiage used.

as for your English Teacher.....In the Morning walk in and say "Good morning Peckerwood" a true sign of respect ,sure to Impress him.Might even help your grade.

"stop bullshitting" would probably work too

Lyle hit it on the head "un-gay" everything you say, and you'll have the American jargon.. hahah..

it's like, you guys call your buds or friends "mates" not that i'd EVER say "mate" but if i did, i'd be referring to my girlfriend, the person i mate with.. so if i referred to a male friend of mine as my "mate" it would be a homosexual remark.. So "un-gay" works perfectly..

oh yeah, and bilbo always says "telly" referring to the television, which is really gay.. TV or television work fine..

hmm i'll have to think of some more

It's actually a harder question than you think, at least for me. I would need to read the essay and then edit it in order to feel comfortable with my suggestions.

I use words like "rubbish" and "telly" all the time. I don't think that is British per se it's just popular language. I say "Kapitan" and I'm not German. I say "bueno" and I'm not Mexican.

I've always had a thing for words.

Yes but rubbish and telly are gay words.....just watch Eddie Murphy Raw, that should help you out more than anything else.

sir and ma'am are signs of respect....you don't have to be a fucking knight to be called sir here. Therefore the lowest economic classes over here can still recieve respect from their children and sometimes co-workers or even everyday people.

I never called my mom or dad sir or maam, not out of a lack of respect, it just wasn't what me or my brother did. It just seems a bit odd to me, too formal and I wouldn't want my kids doing it either. Did always use it for other people's parents/old people in general.

The one English thing I could never get used to is mate. Just doesn't sound right.

This 'mate' word I always use on myspace and stuff. I also use lad a fir bit. In Liverpool we say "Scran" for food and we use the word "Sound" for good, decent etc and also the word "Swerve" i.e. (swerve this lesson or swerve gettin the train lad haha)

The scouse accenet is the best

Yeah, I never used that "sir" or "ma'am" crap when dealing with my parents. I had a friend whose parents made him address them as such and I found it quite ridiculous! My friend's father always called him "son" instead of his name. I thought it strange and wondered how such a tradition got started.

I call my father "Dad" and my mother "Ma."

Mate is hard to get used to but I through it around now and again

It's not just for parents either but the reason BG didn't use Sir or Ma'am is because he's a God Damned Yankee
