    Contender winner survives early scare

    http://www.secondsout.com/USA/news.cfm?ccs=229&cs=19360

Sergio Mora, winner of the first Contender series, survived a second round knockdown to force a seventh round stoppage over the useful Archak TerMeliksetian at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday (May 4) night.

Middleweight TerMeliksetian, 15-4-(12), floored the 25 year-old from Los Angeles, with a left hook counter in the opening stages of the second round. Mora, managed to get to his feet reasonably quickly and regain his composure.

Mora upped the pace from then on, hurting TerMeliksetian a number of times in the fifth and sixth rounds before forcing a stoppage after 2.44 of the seventh stanza.

On the undercard of the Tournament of Contenders promoted card, Alfonzo Gomez and Jesse Feliciano battled to an eight round draw in the rubber match to decide who was the better man. The scores were 77-75 for Gomez while the other two judges saw the bout even at 76-76.

Can't wait till this chump get's stopped & we quit hearing this Contender crap.

I'd like to know what it is about too and is anyone good from it? Manfredo or someone? I think it is a competition where maybe random people are trained to become boxers and if they win the competition, they get a contract? Am I on the right lines?

It was a reality TV show about boxers. It featured Sly Stallon, SRL, Jackie Kallon, and some trainer named Tommy. Basically they picked 16 boxers to fight in a tournament at 160lbs. They split them up into two teams to do the reality tv crap, where they had to do some activity. The winning team got to pick who from their team was fighting and who they were fighting. They did that the first round, then they went as individuals, if you won the activity for that week you got to pick who gets to fight that week. The final four took set up the matches themselves.

The show tried to show the family side of the boxers (wives, children, parents, etc.). The one thing I really hated about the show was that they edited the fights to make them more dramatic. So just by watching you couldnt judge for yourself on who won.

The show was basically promoting boxing from a different view point. Instead of focusing on two guys beating the crap out of each other, they tried to get you to view them as fathers, brothers, sons, etc. who just happen to box for a living. Not a lot of people liked the show, so it is now on espn, it had been on NBC (a major network in the US).

Mora is gonna get KTFO soon enough trust me. He's got fast hands but he hasn't faced anyone with true middleweight power that has fast hands. He got dropped easy yesterday and he didn't KO that guy, he pushed him against the ropes for like a second and right when the guy was throwing a punch back, the ref came in and stopped it. The other guy was still throwing, he wasn't even hurt. They just wanna pad Mora's record, he's a cocky prick that WILL be knocked out sooner or later. It's funny how Brian Kenny and Teddy Atlas can talk shit about fighters like PBF and others, but when it's Sergio Mora then he's the best thing since sliced bread.

ESPN is acting like any other promoter. They have a high profile fighter in Mora and they are going to milk as much as they can out of him till he gets exposed for the average fighter that he is. Everybody knows he is never going to be a great fighter, he lacks the power to make anybody respect him.

I cant blame Mora for it, he is making more money now than he ever could have if he was never on that show. Same goes for the rest of The Contender fighters, there might be one maybe two that will win a title at some point. The fighters on that show were Ishe Smith and Manfredo. They both had previously won minor titles (Smith NABO, USBA, and WBC Continental Americas all at welterweight and Manfredo: EBA, IBU, and NABO titles at light middle). And another fighter had fought for a world title (Jonathon Reid I believe).

At best they were prospects the rest were unknowns.

Mora looked good last night, The knock down was more a flash knock down, He was off balance and got up at the count of one. He was killing that guy with body shots, And I think Gomez should of edged out a decision. Yeah but either guy will get a ass whooping if they step up.

You cant blame anyone of them for anything.. they are all boxers , they all get in the ring and fight , just cause they were on a show to win a million dollars I see no reason to hate them.

Thank you! Somebody actually seeing past the hate Fact is, Mora got dropped on a counter left hook and then preceded to beat up the Shark attack guy even worse. And Mora did have him seriously hurt and the two punches he threw back after the ref stopped it, he was in a daze and Mora probably would have stopped him in another 20 seconds. I do find it surprising that Sechew Powell couldn't move Shark attack and Mora stopped him I think Mora is more about wearing you down and then volume punching to beat you slowly sucking the life from you, he's like a Boa Constrictor... hey now the Latin Snake name fits
