Default Steward: How to beat Winky

    www.fightnews.com

    Wednesday, May 17 2006

Middlewight champion Jermain Taylor recently enlisted super trainer Enamuel Steward to train him and develop a gameplan to defeat defensive specialist Winky Wright on June 17. Taylor has been training for the bout at the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit. "Winky can't win a fight just by keeping his hands over his head," said Steward. "You don't get points for that ?you have to punch sooner or later. That's where Jermain's reflexes will be a big factor and he's doing all kinds of things that people haven't seen from him yet. I've had five southpaw world champions," continued Steward, "and everybody's working to help him ?Andy Lee's showing him what he gets hit the most with as a southpaw and we've got Sechew Powell, another undefeated boxer. But no one has ever seen Winky Wright decisively beaten and he's on a roll right now. I've had a lot of these situations and it's a challenge, but I find it stimulating to me as well. This is a hard guy to fight, and I'm a big fan of Winky, but I see a lot of little weaknesses, and I've got a younger fighter with faster hands and who's bigger. If Jermain's in great shape physically and mentally and competing on a high level in the gym, he's gonna be a difficult guy for anybody to fight."

Me having the utmost respect for E.Steward it does add a bit of stress knowing he'll be training J.T and I'm-a very very....BIG betting Winky fan.But if I know one thing about WINKY its that -he does what you allow him to do more so than what-you think he's about to do.IMO the most disciplined fighter in the history of the sport.Like Emannuel said "no one has ever seen anyone beat him'' he never wastes punches he never gets hit hard. And without Emannuel IMO he would have virtually no chance of winning ! TOO many flaws......Everytime I see emannuel commentating a fight I feel good knowing he's not with J.T.

Steward is an ass. First he says that Winky is basically unbeatable, he knew Tito never really had a chance, Winky would beat B-hop's ass, blah blah blah blah...Now he's training Taylor to beat him and sees "all these little weaknesses". What a jack ass. I strongly dislike both of these fighters. Taylor is a golden boy lil beotch. And Winky is a condescending cocky, boring ass, all defense bastard. I been kinda leanin towards Taylor beatin on Winky, and I still think he will. He's just too damn big and talented. But I just can't decide who I dislike more...

I like Manny Stewart. but I have to agree with you on his flip flopping on Winky, I've seen Manny do it to a few fighters in the past.

I totally disagree with both of-u about Emannuel Steward,he referred to J.T as an amateur even after the 2nd b-hop fight .so I thought it was pretty smart of his camp to hire someone who thinks so highly of Winky ,someone who will not sugar coat the uphill battle in front of J.T. what should he have said? "no I won't train J.T". Personally I wish I could have paid Emannuel not to train him..Then I would feel so much better about betting a very large bet.

Steward can't get in the and fight for Taylor. He might be able to improve him a bit because he's still young. I feel that as long as Wright can deal with Taylor's size he'll school him like he did Trinidad.

Well he can prepare for Manny all day long but in the end he's in there with Jermain NOT Manny. Jermain is big, he's young, he's strong, got a hell of a lot better defense than Tito and he's pretty well rounded. This guy has already fought a master boxer and beaten him twice and I think Winky's lack of anything more than a 1-2 on offense will sway the fight for Taylor.

It'll be a tough call at the end of the night but Taylor will win because he's damn good! And can anyone give him credit for taking such difficult fights? I mean Hopkins twice now Wright....DAMN, I wouldn't be surprised if he went after Calzaghe next (which would be a GREAT fight)

Taylor lost both B-hop fights, but he is a good fighter with a good jab and size advantage over Winky. If he defeats Winky he should take on Jeff Lacy.

Stewards not a full of anything but boxing expertise, thats why Taylor hired him. What do you think he'd do, just say "sorry bub, this cat is unbeatable call atlas".

Every fighter can be beat some way or another.

I live in detroit. And was at kronk yesterday and today.

Jermain was not there today because he was at an interview, but I saw him yesterday.

He is not as big as I expected but looks very good.

My trainer was very good friends with his trainer and so forth back in the day.

My trainers sons were at many national championchips and so forth with Jermain Taylor and Sechew Powell so i got to meet these guys. Taylor is looking very sharp and i think he CAN beat winky wright.

Only thing i disagree is the size diff, Taylor is NOT much bigger then winky.

thats not what the scorecards said.
Lacy is all hype. Hes got a nice physical frame for a running back but Calzaghe proved hes got nothing when he cant get inside.

If he beats Winky, he'll be a p-4-p contender. If that happens, expect a weight shift by wither him or Mayweather, and one helluva bout. Cross your fingers.

Scorecards can kiss my ass! Everyone knows who won those fights. Score cards said Oscar beat Whitaker. Scorecards had him beatin Sturm too. Score cards had Augustus losin to Courtney Burton. But Scorecrads are NEVER wrong are they? Also only a fool thinks Mayweather will ever fight Jermain Taylor. That's just ridiculous.
