Default How can I improve my footwork?

Hi guys. I'm new, 18 years old and started training two months ago.
I can't move like a boxer; I've watched the guys moving, but I can't manage to do the same myself. I find it specially difficult to keep jumping, changing weight from one ball of my foot to the other and every time I punch, I loose balance. I'm in the proper stance (kind of) at the beginning, but I gradually loose it while I'm punching.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that I have flat feet; I don't know... But it 's awful that everyone who started at the same time as I did can move properly and I still look like a clown.
I know I'm not good, but I have the will to learn and I love boxing. Can anyone please help me?!

Get hold of an arobic stepper and practice movement on that. As though you are boxing side to side back and forward step both feet off then back on. You will find it makes both feet work together its a teriffic peace of kit for your feet used properly,You just have to work at it but its a winner.

as a beginner you 1st have to get your rhythm. the best way to do this is with a jump rope. once you get your rhythm you can start developing your footwork with the jump rope, as you see many boxers do for a large part of their training. you're falling off balance cos your timing is not on, when your throwing a punch your whole body needs to be coordinated. when you get your rhythm and footwork with the junp rope move on to shadow boxing in front of a mirror and you will see what you're not doing right, this way you can correct it. hope this helps.

dont forget about WATCHING the feet of fighters who have great footwork

from Ali watching Sugar ray to sugar ray leonard watching Ali ...many greats have done wonders by watching the feet of good footwork in action

also make sure and visualize urself there ..when the fighters your watching are2 feet from eachother visualize through your ind seeing someone 24 inches from you and using your technique

that is horrible...this guy really wants to kinow how to fight not look like an a**....
If you want you must practice throwing your jab first....everything works off the jab or is set up by it...get to where you are throwing 1000 or so jabs a day...good/perfect jabs....make sure your feet aren't crossing over..you won't step over 6-8 inches per jab if your doing this correctly...a good thing to do is to draw a line on the ground(or lay a jump rope down on the ground) and after a couple of jabs look down to make sure your feet are not crossing over....you should never lunge with your jab....this will help with your balance.....always try to end with a jab because the jab will set you right again....as for bouncing all around....wait till you've mastered the jab first.....don't rush anything....
It feels good to be back home.

You should learn how to dance...

Take up some kind of dancing.

This will get your coordination going...when you can dance then footwork is NO problem..

I am NOT joking i am being dead serious...

Ray Robinson was a tap dancer - he used to dance on street corners as a child for change. His footwork was pretty good !!

What a crap feeling to think you half to first master a jab. Everybody thinks they can jab and it's heartbreaking to find out you can't. It's also frustrating to learn how tough footwork is and sucks to find out how bad you are at it.

That youtube kid... what the F would possess someone to do that? That video would be more useful if he was trying to become a comedian.

    Default Feedback on footwork

Thanks to all of you guys for answering!

I think you've made pretty good points about the relationship between dancing and rope jumping and boxing footwork, 'cause those are the one thing I've always sucked at (dancing) and the other thing I can't manage to do at the gym (rope jumping). You have to jump with one foot and then with the other?
If anyone have any tips on how to improve with the rope, thanks. I'll keep up the practice.
And that's a really good point about watching great fighters; I think that has helped my punches a little.
Have you guys been boxing for long? Is anyone a pro?
