Default Squash all the bullshat rumors! Warren wants Calzaghe vs Wright for Sept 9 or 16

Draw was Wright result for Calzaghe

    http://www.secondsout.com/UK/news.cfm?ccs=228&cs=19735

By Ant Evans: No-one in boxing relishes a draw but there will be two men, at least, who will be pleased that Saturday's World Middleweight Title clash between Winky Wright and champion Jermain Taylor ended in a draw. The three ringside judges in Memphis couldn't separate the pair after their exciting 12 rounds but super-middleweight king Joe Calzaghe and promoter Frank Warren could capitalise on the result.

Despite (or perhaps because of) Calzaghe's March masterclass against Jeff Lacy, Warren has struggled to find a suitably high-profile opponent for his undefeated Welsh southpaw.

The search for a July 8 foe stretched on interminably before, finally, Glen Johnson agreed to meet Calzaghe. But with Calzaghe pulling out of the fight due to his chronically injured left hand, the search begins anew, with a date of September 9 or 16 know the focus .

Warren is known to be keen on his IBF/WBO champion fighting southpaw Wright and, contrary to what has been written elsewhere, last weekend's result actually increases the chance of the fight taking place.

Had Wright have won the middleweight title in Memphis, he would have been contractually obligated to give Taylor an immediate rematch, this eliminating him from Calzaghe's September hit-list.

However, with a draw, Wright has no such obligation and has even gone on record as saying he has no desire to rematch with Taylor.

Meanwhile, Taylor and his team are already making plans for an October defense in the champ's native Little Rock, and that fight will most certainly not be against Wright.

And with the other handful of top names in the middleweight division already tied up, the most logical next step for Wright is to face Calzaghe at super-middle. It could be the pnly big fight available to the 34 year old.

Plus, Wright has fought in the UK three times before, all on Frank Warren cards.

In the mid-1990s he beat Ensley Bingham, Steve Foster and Adrian Dodson in effortless performances which gave British fans a hint of the greatness which was to come from the Florida southpaw.

Holy shat...if this comes off...I wouldn't know who to pick but it would be one hell of a fight...I can tell ya that much.

Have either of them ever faced someone with even remotely similar styles as the other? I don't think so...this would be so tough to pick but I would pick Winky if I had to.

Good point...but...not sure that I agree.

Calzaghe comes in top form...all swarming like killer bees & shat...I just aint so sure my bwoy Winky's d would hold out under Calzaghe's speed & power.

Joe threw something like 1000 to 1200+ shots against Lacy...& granted...that's against a no defense fighter...but Calzaghe is accurate.

Take that into effect & add that to the fact that Soliman batted something like 1200+ shots against Winky and nothing happened...but there again...Soliman aint even in the same physical plane as Jooooooooooooooooooooooesif!

Tuff call with Calzaghe winning I think. 168 is a big step for Winky that would turn in to a stumble...

These kind of fights are the type that I love to hate...all my favorites are fighting each other...& I love it...but then hate it.

I have to disagree. I think super middleweight is perhaps a step too far for winky and an on form calzaghe could very well overwhelm him....

Good revenge match from one Birmingham fighter to another...I think Winky would be Biting off way to much at Supermiddleweight...Then again if anyone can hang it's Winky, That jab and defense of his gets everyone all fuked up...I'd love to see it though...Oh and Wacks have a for the road, for the article

honestly, I would far rather see Bhop step in and fight Calzaghe... His track record against southpaw's, and having recently moved up so much and dominated Tarver, I think he could actually pull it off.. As much as I would be cheering for Winky I do think he would get overwhelmed, there's no point for him to move up again so soon either.. He probably walks around just over the SMW limit, he would really have to bulk up some and he just moved up. Obviously this is a great fight if it comes off, and I would be very surprised if it did.

As do I agree & to that.

168 is getting deep for Winky.

It'd backfire in my mind though.

Agreed...Winky is durable & has passed most of the tests before him...but jumping up against the most legit 168er would be a drastic mistake...& jtrock you get's the click in return.

I know that you know that Calzaghe aint Tarver...so don't take it as an insult when I say...well...Calzaghe aint Tarver!

Hopkins would have his hands full all night long. Craft for craft it'd be interesting to see who came out on top...but I'd rather neither risk losing & not going out on top.

Wright most likely does walk around at 168...but in all truthitude...I aint so sure he's conditioned for 160...I know not 12 rounds at 168. I watched Taylor Wright again...& they both lagged at the end...Wright looked just as tired & tentative as Taylor.

Calzaghe would not allow that. Follow Calzaghe's career...he ALWAYS dictates pace...no matter what...& if knocked down or hit hard...he fires up, digs deep, & powers through.

Calzaghe is very very unappreciated, IWHO.

Good point. i think that calzaghe's style has more advantage cos it is awkward and he throws way more punches. i think joe has faster hands and feet. more power.

WINKY covers up too much. taylor was throwing one-two or- three punch combos.
When you cover up against a fighter like joe, he will throw a flurry of fast accurate and pwerful punches. remember what happened to jeff when he covered up.

I give this fight to joe, either a late stoppage or a points victory.

    GO CALZAGHE!!!

If winky got in the ring with calzaghe, i think calzaghe would do an ven ebtter job on him than he did to lacy.

I know you are all about to say woo wtf winkys defence bla bla bla... but here is why

I think calzgahe all he would have to do is stand in front of winky, winky dos not have the power to hurt calzaghe, nor does he have the physical stengh to push calzaghe about the ring. No matter how goos his defence is he would have to open it up to throw punches at calzaghe, and that would be the key moments when the calzaghe flurys kick in, and after a fw short rounds winky would get tired, however i could see that fight being a very very borring one. I think winky would be very relectent to open up to punch, would prolly hope calzaghe would tire out hitting gloves,

From one point of view im all for the fight, i think a calzaghe easy win, could then set him up for a cracker with kessler/byer, tarver, JT, RJJ..

But form the other point of view, it hink it could be a very borring fight, unles clzaghe does what i still think JT shoulda done. Go for the upper arms and smash holy hell out of them, coz winky got no power at middle or Super-middle, smash them upper arms, then see him keep a trong guard up, or even throw a worthy jab, doubt he would last up untill round 5 if either fighter does that to him.

I totally respect and understand why everyone feels joe c. would spank My P4P no.1 fighter Winky he definitely put on a display against Lacy that would make anyone favor him...... But I have been in the gym with both of these guys for years .And its hard to imagine anyone except father time beating Winky convincingly..I must admit out of all the fighters out there if there's anyone that can its joe. .... BUT I'M going down with the ship.

You guys are probably right. I mean, Calzaghe is such a huge step up for a natural 154 lb fighter, it may just overwhelm Winky. I don't know, but Winky is the smarter fighter imo with the better defense and I don't buy that Calzaghe is that accurate. And I definitely don't think he would land much. Nobody does against Winky. But then again that weight might work against him. I don't know, I really don't know. I know Winky said he wants a mega fight, and I know he threw Calzaghe's name around, but it's definitely the toughest out of any number of fights on the table for him. It probably wouldn't be in his best interest. But if it did happen, Winky is my boy and I would be hard pressed to pick against him.

I wonder how fighting that high up would affect Winky's stamina and his speed. I also think that this would be a step to far for Winky. All the props in the world to him for everything that he has and done, but I think Joe would make it a long night for Winky.

Um well Wright has faced speed in Mosley and Power in Taylor. Calzaghe has faced power but not speed. I don't think that Calzaghe has fought someone who was faster then he was. But he's fought counter punchers, and those were the guys that dropped him... pick em fight, but I'm not sure Calzaghe wouldn't be caught in between those flurries he throws
