i think fernando vargas (whos a true middleweight) paid off from fighting much smaller men his whole career and he just overpowered them and blew past them just like felix trinidad @ welterweight..i think he's a SOLID but looked great vs little welterweights..the first true guy his size he fought winky wright..he got exposed his best win was ike quartey who started his career @ 140 and yory boy campas who's always chubby and probably could make 140 if he choses

was he that good or just fighting smaller guys?

He was very competitive in big fights. He gave Tito hell in their fight which I believe changed him for the worse as a fighter, he was beating Oscar (IMO) until he was wobbled with that big right hook. These two fights against Shane should not count against his legacy because both of these fighters were shot and Shane did not fight the Vargas who fought Tito, the outcome would have been totally different.

I agree, he didn't just get blown out by Oscar and Tito. He pushed them to the absolute limit and it took all they had to beat him. He knocked both men down and fought couragously against them. Of course Mosley didn't just KO the Vargas who fought Tito, but he wasn't the same Mosley who beat Oscar Delahoya the first time either. In their Primes, the outcome would have been the same I feel, a win for Mosley. But it would have been one Hell of a fight!

vargas is a good fighter but lost the big fights against hall of famers trinidad and de la hoya, he turns brawler in big fights against top class fighters and as a result he gets picked off to easy in later stages of those fights, but no matter what he has given us some great fights, plenty of colour and charecter so he should be remembered as a entertaining prize fighter who when the going got tough for him in the ring he came out fighting and layed it on the line and with that he brought excitment and ko finishes even though it was him being ko'd

I am not a particular Vargas fan, but don't dislike him or anything.

I will always respect an honest athlete who gives it his best shot, never ducks anyone, gives 100% and was always carried out on his shield.

Yeah Vargas was never afraid to fight the best, I just think the Trinidad loss took to much away from him then followed by the back injury left him a shell of his former self
