With WBA junior middleweight champion Jose Antonio Rivera calling out the whole 154-pound division in hopes of landing a big money fight, there is a name he has been conspicuously leaving off his wish list, that of undefeated mandatory challenger Joachim Alcine of Montreal. Alcine won a unanimous decision over Javier Mamani this past June in what was supposed to have been a final eliminator for a crack at Rivera and his WBA world championship belt. Alcine has remained patient as the names of Vargas, Mayweather, Mosley, Margarito, Dzindziruk and Karmazin have all been floated out to the media. When Rivera tried calling out Cory Spinks earlier this week, saying he was willing to face any of the top 154-pounders, Alcine who remains in the gym training figured enough was enough. “Jose Antonio Rivera keeps calling for the top boxers to face him,” Alcine told Fightnews. “He knows that the #1 contender is myself and he knows that is his responsibility to defend against the #1 contender. He won the title fighting an optional defense and should be ready to defend it. Stop saying he doesn’t have anybody to fight and trying to avoid his obligations and fight Jo Alcine. He cannot fight against anybody else if he wants to keep his title.”
