TAYLOR-WRIGHT II FALLING APART FASTER THAN IT SEEMED TO BE COMING TOGETHER!
    By G. Leon

WINKY TO TAYLOR: 50-50 or no fight!

Over the past couple of days there has been a buzz throughout the boxing world about the Jermain Taylor-Winky Wright rematch taking place later this year on HBO PPV. After both Taylor and Wright came on the record making it clear that they want the fight, the business reps for both fighters opened discussions to see if an agreeement could be reached. Offers were made to Wright, which the former junior middleweight king is unwilling to accept. Although Wright is being offered nearly two million dollars more than he was guaranteed for the first Taylor fight, the Winkster says, "there's no way the fight is happening unless it's 50-50. I took the 55-45 split for the first fight just to prove that I'm the best middleweight out there. I don't think fans should blame Jermain but the people behind him need to come up with a 50-50 offer otherwise there's not going to be a fight! This isn't about how much more I'm making for this fight, this is about me getting treated fairly. I've been taking shorts my whole career and now that I've proven myself they got to do right by me." With the Taylor fight seeming far less likely than it did after yesterday's discussion, Boxingtalk asked Wright who he would be fighting on HBO World Championship and according to the pride of St. Pete's, Ike Quartey appears to be the frontrunner as this goes to print. When informed of Wright's comments, Taylor promoter Lou DiBella told Boxingtalk, "I say this with love, he ain't never fighting Jermain unless he leaves planet Winky to return to planet earth." Taylor advisor Ozell Nelson and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, who is currently out of the country, were unavailable for immediate comment. Remember where you heard it first! (6:26 PM EST)

Dibella isn't going to let Wright have 50-50. So looks like Jermain is going to fight Ouma unless Dibella coughs up 50-50.

Yeah, real shocker. Wright's confused. He seriously over estimates his value. Taylor's the champion, not him. And he's not a big enough name to deserve equal pay. Won't be long before we read Taylor-Ouma back on.

I think if Taylor doesn't get Wright he should look to none other than EDISON MIRANDA

Abraham is either sick or scared or both and the date will have to be pushed back so if Edison is available JT should take it!!!!

If that doesn't work out here's some other names he should starting thinking about: Pavlik, Asikainen, Mora, Castillejo, Sturm (if he continues to box not only due to his loss but the untimely death of his mom), Karmazin, Forrest, Spinks, Allan Green, Fernando Vargas.

He's got other options but it's wonderful he's trying to get Wright again

Forrest, are you kidding? Ike Quartey came down on him. Vernon even knew he didn't win that one. Vargas looked very uncrisp at his last bout. Although I still want to see him do well. Although I know that Wright doesn't have the belt, I don't think he is the man that has to prove anything. There might not be a PPV fight at all for Taylor against those other fighters....

Good point. Since when should the undisputed champion have to take a 50/50 split with a fighter who is not a household name.?

Forrest (yeah, he lost), Vargas, Karmazin are coming off losses. Why should they get a title shot in a division they never even faught in? Asikainen and Mora are just laughable

I am new to boxing and it is by far my favorite sport and I love the site . But it seems to be a second tier sport (for a variety of reasons probably....bought judges, ABC belts, few really good fights, etc.). Being a secondary sport, I would think that the average $50 customer would either be really knowledgable about boxing or not know few other names at all besides obvious heavyweights, DLH..... Saying that, among people that are into the sport, would LOVE to see a Wright/Taylor fight and Taylor in this circle isn't anymore well known than Wright. They are in a class all of their own, with Wright IMO being a first among equals. Why is 50/50 so ridiculous?

Cuz he's not the champion. And while Wright might be as well known if not more, than Taylor. He doesn't have a fighting style that makes people want to see him. So if he's not the champion and doesn't bring huge crowds, why should he get 50/50?

All right Violent I will grant you that 50/50 is perhaps too much due to his boxing style. Personally, I love watching Winky fight...but everyone wants a powerhouse and not so much defense...

I like watching Wright fight as well. He's an outstanding fighter. But he's not an exciting fighter. And excitement is what attracts people.

Miranda is under contract to fight Abraham as long as they can make it happen by the end of Sept. Fight has been rescheduled for Sept 23rd, so unless Abraham plays sick again, Miranda is busy. Hopefully Miranda takes care of business in Germany so he can come back and work on a fight with JT sometime in 2007. I think that would be an all out war with two strong hitters and similar styles (plus it may be one of the few people that could actually KO JT at middleweight)

Wright is a big name with people that know boxing to be a truly big PPV fighter you either have to have a belt (or two) or be a crowd pleasing fighter. Right now Winky is neither one of those. I enjoy watching him box, he is one of the best tacticians in boxing right now, but the general sports fan doesnt want to see that. And the general sports fans are the people that a fighter needs to bring in to be able to have big PPV numbers.
