Default On This Day: Patterson KO's Moore To Become Youngest Ever Heavyweight Champ

James Slater: For my On This Day article this week I focus on a heavyweight title fight that made history. At least the winner of the bout made history. That man was the recently deceased Floyd Patterson.

By defeating the seemingly ageless "Ol' Mongoose" in Archie Moore to claim the championship of the world at the tender age of twenty-one, Floyd instantly put himself in the record books. Read this in the paper today, was gonna post it surprised that it was up here. But yeah that's pretty cool. Always felt that Patterson is one of the more underappreciated champions of all time so I was kind of surprised about the oupouring after his death from boxing fans and national media alike. Very well deserved. He paved the road for skill fighters everywhere. The first champ that wasn't able to rely on his KO power to win belts.

Also on this day Sugar Ray Leonard ko'd Wilfred Benitez.
