    Default Trainers....

So I took up boxing all of about 3 weeks ago. Only one gym in my area, and as i dont have a car at the moment (damn ex-girl stole it, that b****) I can't drive to a better gym yet. I'm thinking Gleasons in NYC or one of the many gyms in Philadelphia once a get a car.... So the place I've been boxing is more geared towards those looking to get into shape. As the "instructor" often says, "we've got something for everyone." Well, I'm not "everyone." I came to the gym with a pretty hardcore training ethic from previous sports. Always have the "go go go till you drop" attitude (damn, way to many quotes in this post). No one in this gyms seems to have the same attitude though.

So on to my questions. What should I look for in a trainer? How hard is it to find trainers with the same entuhsiasm as me? Will it be harder to find a trainer that will take me seriously since I am already 22 and just starting to box? Not looking to be the next champ or anything, but I would like to have a decent ameture career, and if things go right, maybe a few professional fights eventually. Lord knows I have the commitment, now, we'll see if i can develope the talent....

Also, I've found that I really love boxing. I thought my last sporting endevor (rock climbing) was my life's passion, but after just 3 weeks of boxing, I have changed that opinion. Since I am pretty old to be starting this, I have no hopes of ever making a living boxing professionally.... However, being a trainer sounds interesting. What does it take? How does one break into the field of boxing training?

Also, what should I expect to pay for a trainer? The trainer at the gym I'm at now wants $60 an hour, which seems pretty rediculous. Will trainers make deals if payed up front per month? And for just trying to break into the ametures, how many hours a week should I spend with a trainer vs. training by myself in the gym?

Didnt say that I AM paying $60 an hour, thats just what the trainer wants for personal 1 on 1 training. Which I wont pay. Gleason's charges $80 a month for membership, and has many trainers that charge around $25 an hour, and will cut that price if you pay up front for a certain amount of time. Does that sound more reasonable? From my limited knowlege so far, Gleasons sounds like one of the best gyms out there.... Ali, Foreman, Tyson, among others have trained there....

Why go to a famous gym, it dont mean jack. They become famous because of location as a rule [they are near a Promotional base or sold better] Boxers as a rule learn there skills in some backwater, out of the way. Then are brought to the bright lights by a Promoter for promotion. Ill give you a tip go for two week and look at the gyms in your area find a coach with a squad of Boxers whose basic skills are good and the coach that is watching his charges and qeuitly goes about his buiesness, thats the gym you should be looking for. Thats where you will learn, never go with the glitz the glitz will come looking for you when youre ready.

On my other question.... What does it take to become a trainer yourself? Seems like a profession I'd really like....

Next year will be my39th year of doing it, Ive been in the sport 43 year fuck thats a lifetime. Here goes if your in it for the money forget it, Ive earned a few qiud but if like me youll put it back in most trainers are mugs who sacrifice family life for the sake of there fighters to do the best they can for them with not a lot in return. Ive got a lot of respect for Amatuer trainers who keep working there bollocks off year after year for the same club without reward. They are the real Heroes of this game giving the kids the most important thing they have time and knowledge. But its a more level playing field than the Pro side. I feel its better to have Boxed if you want to coach, I sometime wonder why people come into the game coaching without the knowledge to show the skill. Its just some ego trip and never met a good one yet, anyway the best of luck youll meet some of the nicest people on gods earth. plus some of the biggest crooks along the way, but listen , look and learn, I did and have enjoyed every minute of it and thats a fact

Definatly not in this for the money man. My previous career goal was to be a mountain guide, a profession that pays an average of $20,000 a year.... I'm in it to not have a regular 9-5 job sitting at a desk. To be my own boss. To be involved in a sport for the rest of my life. I love the blood sweat and tears man. Love pushing myself past my limits, and showing other people that what they thought were their limits are just the beginning. How many amature boxing trainers actually make the switch to professional training? Also, how realistic is it to open and own a sucessful gym rather than just being a trainer at a gym?
