    Default Manfredo's chances...

Ok.. So ive just been watching pemberton - Manfredo..
And ok..Pemberton is no joe calzaghe..But i think peter might just show joe something...
The quality opposition isnt the same..But peter was still looking very nice and sharp.. If he can look that sharp when he fights joe..Then he might do good...
Also i think there might be somewhat of a quality shock for joe too..
Joe's opposition hasnt been great..Jeff lacy would probably beat manfredo.. But peter is a much better boxer.. And is a different fight for joe..
Also i dont think joe has really taken peter seriously and lacks motivation for the bout..
And what with peter having freddie as his trainer for his last few fights..And all the hype of sugar ray helping out.. I know sugar ray is no trainer..But im sure some words of wisdom and if peter respects ray enough to listen to what he tells him and go out there to do it.. We might well see some nice work..
The fight is getting closer and im a total sucker for the underdog.. Love an upset..
And im truely coming around to the thought of it..
    Anyone else feel this way?
    Peace

I'd love to see Manfredo pull this one off but it's going to be a monumental ask of him.

I actually think if the fight was taking place in Rhode Island he would have a chance, albiet a small one.

But travelling to Wales to face 20,000 hostile fans, and the longest reigning unbeaten champ in boxing, who handed out the beatdown to end all beatdowns to the last American hype who went over there, then Peter would need balls of steel not to be intimidated.

For Peter to have any chance whatsoever he needs to have a good first round.

If Calzaghe rocks him early I can see what little self belief he must have just literally draining away in an instant.

BUT if somehow Manfredo manages to remain totally unfazed by the occasion, then I'd say he does have a chance. Calazaghe isn't unbeatable, doesn't punch nearly as hard as he used to, has hand problems, struggles to make weight etc.

Stranger things have happened, just not very often

I dont buy into Manfredo beating Joe Calzaghe. It would take something of James Buster Douglas proportions for him to do so. I dont even think the fight will be that close either. The Bika fight is not going to be repeated. Calzaghe will beat him down, and hope upon hope, actually go into a meaningful fight...

I know its not on the agenda but I would dearly love Calzaghe to fight Kessler, probably wont be Kessler though...

It seems to me this fight is purely a gimmic

Pandering to TV ratings for headline generation.

Its going to be a boxing lesson of monolithic proportions - why doesnt joe try boxing blindfolded or something just to make it a contest.. cant believe hes even doing it when theres Kessler out there which is what would be a meaningful fight

Peter couldn't knock out Alfonso Gomez, a fighter whose great ring acomplishments include a stalemate trilogy with Jesse Feliciano.

Oh come on in all fairness Alfonso gomez is probably one of if not the best fighter to have been on the contender shows in a way...
The potential to be great is there its just never really came together for him..
His skills are excellent..I love his style he can really fight.. I remember first time i saw him he was knocking out sparring partners left right and centre..

I really dont know how his career has never really picked up but yet people like mora and smith have been getting payed and builded theyr name up since the show..

He's not quite a tomato can but he's no world class fighter, thats for sure.

Plus he's a welterweight. If Peter can't knock out a 147 lb journeyman in two attempts how is he going to stop a 168 lb undefeated Ring Champion?

The answer to why Gomez's career hasn't picked up...weed. He couldn't appear on a Contender card becuase he tested positive, and his fat ass should really be fighting at 147. He would be a monstrer at welter.

Oh yeh i remember hearing that.. Cos he was sparking middleweight sparring partners on the contender..
At welter he would indeed be a banger..
It wouldnt suprise me if he was not very motivated..He is ranked at light middleweight atm i think..
But if he could make welter again perhaps he could make some sort of impact..

A fair enough reason for peter not bieng able to stop gomez is simple..I think you rush in too fast to discredit him...

For one..Manfredo is originally a welterweight.. Then light middle for a period before making middleweight for the sole purpose of bieng on the contender..
Gomez also bieng a welter weight.. Has still never been stopped...
And as you can see peter is looking fairly strong at 168 right now..
I imagine it has taken a while and good training to help him fill out to feel strong at supermiddleweight
But you can see by his body type that its a good weight for him and hes looked strong recently..

It will be closer that the Lacy fight, but Manfredo can only win if Joe doesn't take him seriously or if Joe breaks a hand. Unlike Lacy, Manfredo has a little skill and a little defense. He knows how to roll with punches and he knows how to counter. Also, Peter has more power at 168 than he's had at any other weight. Calzaghe should still win pretty easily, but I don't think it will be a Lacy-level asswhipping.
