Default Is Teddy Atlas becoming the next Larry Merchant?

Have you guys noticed how he drops at least a dozen different analogies into every single fight these days, most of which are utterly pointless?

I mean every single fight he starts spewing out sickening bile like 'He's a water fawcett thats just been turned on', or 'his punch is like the sweet melody of a musical door ring'.

He then goes onto pointless stories to attempt to draw out some kind of wise analagy, you know about a young boy who helps his dad to restore an old car and that of the engine of the car has to be nurtured and carefully brought back to life, and fed with high quality oil.......and then he'll relate it to the fight saying this is .......insert fighter name here......... his oil change, and .....insert fighter name here.........is the fuel that he is putting into the car to make it run better... erm wtf

It's obvious he takes these analogies seriously too as you never hear the same analagy repeated twice, he has at least a half dozen new ones for every show.

Can we start a petition to make him stop? It's getting out of control now, I want to hear him commentate on the fight at hand not go into some pointless fantasy about a small boy who discovers a dragons egg and who uses his dragon for the forces of good and to help overthrow the cruel tryanny of oppression that his people are under, whilst another boy discovers a dragon egg but uses his dragon for evil, to enslave and kill his fellow man, and that somehow ...insert fighter name here...... has been given the gift of a strong jab, which is his dragon egg and that he must choose whether to use it for good in making effective use of his jab or for bad by neglecting his jab and resorting to one punch power......

Please Teddy, I love your commentaries most of the time but these F****** analogies have to stop!

I like Teddy Atlas, but sometimes he gives me headache with his boxing demo before the main event.

He better than Max Kellerman for sure.

    funny stuff, cc

i personally cant stand the guy.
he knows what hes talking about.... obviously, but his commentating personality is awful and espn should NEVER AGAIN allow one of his stupid ass "scorecards" to be shown on tv. he can keep that shit to himself

i cant remember the fight, but it was only a month or two ago where teddy had some guy he liked get knocked down in a round.

teddy gives the guy who got knocked down the round scoring it as a 10-9 in his favor, citing it as a "flash knockdown" (it wasnt) and saying that his guy did enough to pull out the round (he didnt) everybody in the room was like "wtf?!"

of course this is only an example of one round that teddy fucked up, and we all know that he will do this in 3 or 4 rounds of any fight regardless of whats actually going on inside the ring

I used to like Teddy..but more and more he has started to get on my nerves a bit.

He's so preachy..he acts like he is the pope of boxing. He did that whole "STOP THIS FIGHT!! STOP THIS FIGHT!!!" melodrama a few months back. Uh-oh, teddy atlas has spoken.

He is always reaching for those not-so-relevent analogies. I still consider Atlas worth while and think overall he adds more than he takes away. Much better then kellerman

Kellerman is just too goofy and wacky. I have no idea how he got on television. He says so many stupid things. He talks like a cartoon character. He was talking all that smack about oscar and was talking up mma on the Oscar-Floyd PPV.

    Very entertaining post, Bilbo!

At some point during Friday Night Fights two things always cross my mind...

Could Teddy Atlas take my lunch money?

Why the hell does Joe Tessitore look at Atlas so dreamily when they are standing face-to-face? They need to take half a step back from each other even if it leaves them partialy out of the shot.

haha Joe does come across as his greatest fan. Remember when he wanted that fight stopped and Joe kept saying, 'You've earned the right Teddy, you've earned the right to say what you think'.

He should take over Harold Letterman job. Teddy score cards are why more accurate.

Haha, I was expecting him to climb over the ropes. That was top 5 greatest Atlas moments.

No they are not. Merchant was an actual referee and judge. Teddy's scorecards have like 5 10-10 rounds per fight.

That's some funny crap Bilbo. You are right that he's getting carried away with it.

But he's no Merchant. At least Atlas knows what he's talking about with fighters. Merchant is clueless and annoying.

I really get sick of the weight issue with Atlas. Always talking about their weight for the last couple of fights. Gets annoying. But he does know his stuff pretty well.

I will say that Ledderman was the only person who seemed to be watching the actual Hopkins/Trinidad fight

Foreman"Oh this isnt the fight he wants, his legs cant hold on,hes getting tired"
Trinidad Sr"You got him Tito,he cant take your power"
Ledderman"I have it 11 rounds to two for Hopkins"

that post was too funny! that dragon analogy was priceless man! hahaha...i think atlas would be a better commentator than Larry Merchant though. Teddy knows a lot more about actual boxing and isnt as racist as Merchant. I do think Larry provides good comic relief though. Especially when it was (i think PBF against Carlos Baldomir) and Jim Lampley had to remind him to pick up his microphone before starting to speak (Merchant had apparently been enjoying some nice tasty scotch that evening)...and then we got Lampley himself...who gets accused of smoking weed and slamming his hot model GF into walls (btw did those charges end up gettin dropped?)

the HBO commentary on boxing i think is entertaining and i dont think they should 'get rid of' or replace anyone. it would be nice to see people like Larry, Big George Foreman and Roy Jones Jr all return to their commenting positions once in awhile because i think they all bring interesting fight commentary in their own way. Teddy's dragon stories need to get cut down a bit, maybe George should be a little less PC and safe in his commentary ("...if he moves his hands...he may see some success later because he can still win this boxing match..."), maybe Larry Merchant should be outfitted with a clip-on mic when he's had more than 3 scotches and needs to stop jocking fighters like Wladimir Klitschko and Oscar Delahoya because he finds them attractive...and yeah maybe Roy Jones should talk in 3rd person less (wait no he can still do that...he's Roy Jones). Anyway, I think what I am saying is you kind of grow up through the years with these guys so when they leave, you miss 'em; for that unique style of commentary and personality that they each brought to the game. I think that I welcome the input of the boxing genius of Teddy Atlas but at the same time would be a little sad to see Larry Merchant gone; at least gone for good. I mean...what else is that guy gonna do without boxing? Maybe they should give him his own boxing show!

Like Kellerman, the guy can't pick a fight to save his life.
