I am not sure it is a martial arts but wrestling, but a martial art I would think Judo.. I have a friend who talks about judo and it sounds like a pretty good thing to know defensively.
I heard Aikidos good because you use your opponents attacks against them.
I do not know much about Aikidos, but Judo is similar to that it sounds like. The person comes at you and you counter the move. Just plain wrestling is also a good thing for someone to learn.Originally Posted by ICE COLD BOXING

I would have to say muay thai (thaiboxing)
It learns you to fight with the use of all your extremities (legs, knees, elbows and fists)
Either punching or kicking
What do you want to get out of it?
Well i know boxing i thought myself martial arts wouldn't be bad to learn either to protect myself even better.Originally Posted by Munky
Bushidokan, involves all of the striking basics and great self defense...The class also offers a lot of sparring with controlled contact, so you would have a lot of experience against all levels of competition including your instructor...They also incorporate time for hardening the knuckles and feet...Just a good all around art of the offensive...Its like a street fight turned into an art... As you get deeper into the program there will be katas and more complex routines to get to the next level...What i really enjoyed was seeing that you cannot progress past orange belt unless you are able to break a board with every single kick and punch that you have learned....and you have to be 16 or 18 to even qualify to earn a black belt...I can't stand 12 yr olds being a black belt..thats BS IMO.

You are the Creator of all that is, all that was, and all there ever will be.....
If you already know boxing and you box then (not being biased) but Judo will serve you well and then you will cover both ranges.Originally Posted by ICE COLD BOXING
Judo is a fantastic art/sport. Its tough but rewarding and as far as self defence is concerned it works very well since most altercations take place in a confined space or within clinching distance.
Also due to the fact you have to fight for your grades and in competition its pressure tested. You try to throw against a fully resiting opponent and if you go to the ground then you try to submit a fully resiting opponent. In other words none of this choregraphed crap where someone comes at you with a bottle that is so telegraphed that you grab the wrist and try the old twisty wristy funky shit (that never works). Its full on balls to the wall fighting without punches.
Judo teaches you close proxemic awareness, body mechanics, weight displacement. Best of all it teaches you how to ednt hings quickly from the clinch. be under no illisuion though it takes time and you have to invest time before you will be proficient enough to defend yourself with it.
I also train in WW2 combatives. Chin jabs, slaps, hammerfists for striking. All gross motor skills that work well in situation where adrenal stress can cause you to forget the fancy moves you learned in your Ninja class.
If you want any further info then just ask.
For fitness I would say Boxing/Kickboxing...if you call that a M-Art.
But if your talking defense wise, I'd say Tae-Kwon-Do.
Did that for a year. Loved it. Learnt alot in a short time.
CAN NOT BE OLD SCHOOL BOXING THOUGH!
Yes i am going to a boxing gym but i also want to learn something different i heard Judo was good my grandad used to go to Judo he was ok he said it was good so yes more info please munky cc.
In my youth i was a national champion at judo and found it really good.
I put my two kids trough a year of judo since you really learn balance and composure in close combat.
But never did i experience the thrills i had with boxing and muay thai
