    Default Aikido

Any thoughts on this horseshit? I've read time and time again how awesome it is in practical situations, but those same idiots talk about how it takes at least 10years to learn it such that it has that level of effectiveness. Sounds to me like an excuse for how ineffective it is... ie, just another over-priced martial art that good for nothing but taking your money claiming its effectiveness based on passive demonstrations like these ones.

well that stuff does look like crap....I had a buddy of mine that was into Aikido and I went to work out with him a couple of times in HS, but it looked completely different...Whatever type of Aikido he was into was very practical and effective...not sure what the difference is...they trained at full speed and it was a pretty intense workout...lots of throws and joint manipulation.

I think some people forget that all Martial Arts aren't geared to teach streetfighting situations. A lot of discipline and mental toughness pertain to quite a bit of the teaching. Not to mention the rigorous training and dedication. I've watched black belt tests from some of these styles that cover days of hard physical and mental challenges.

If you want to learn to whoop someones ass on the streets or compete no holds barred, you'll probably want to crosstrain or join a MMA gym. If you want discipline, camaraderie, and a very fun hobby, try something like Aikido.

There are hard and soft styles of Aikido.Yonshinkai is a hard style of Aikido. Being honest someone like steven segal could probably make it work for him but you have to really proficient and it relies upon someone making the first move, which we know in a self defence situation is bullshit. Its not something you could pick up for a year and then use IMO.

We have a yoshinkai school near us and ive been along a couple of times, not for me i'm afraid. Full of portly older guys....

They do practice ukemi (breakfalling) quite religiously so the one benefit is that when you do get your ass kicked from trying to defend yourself with this at least you will know how to fall onto the deck without getting hurt.

I don't like to knock styles too much but in all honesty...its not for me and i don't rate it THAT much.

The first video almost looks like a ballet because people are just falling over and jumping. Those videos are crap but i'm sure its taught differently in some places because theres no way it would be popular at all if all classes taught it like that.

The top video is systema. I did systema for a while. What you have to understand is this is not sparring its a movement drill designed to increase awareness relaxation etc. I use a lot of these drills in my group. Vladimere from top video is also ex kgb met him a number of times.
At my club I use alot of soft slow movement drills but also use full speed and full contact sparring etc.

Nirvana, can you provide a hard sparring video? All the practitioners (especially guys on youtube) claim its effectiveness, but can't produce a single video....because it's for defense, law enforcement, killing, blah, blah, blah. But surely there are police vids where a guy does an aikido throw...

My tkd master was also a master in Aikido so naturally I learned alot of its effectiveness. But he actually said it himself that he wouldnt relly on it alone in a self defence situation. The way he used it was in a fight you need to know striking but many fights become a grappling match and most people who are not trained fighters will be out of position and leave and arm exposed, extended. I think a move that many of you are fermiluar with is the Kamura this is actually an Aikido move. I think you just have to apply the art in the right situation with the right support from other styles and it can be very affective.
