    Default Who is your ISP??

I was just wondering who you guys use as your ISP,how much you pay a month and which kind of speeds you get?

I want to upgrade mine,I'm currently with NTL,2MEG broadband but everyone I know is on at least 4 MEG. I mean right now,I'm downloading some things and it's taking AGES!!

I just joined Tiscali last month El Gamo. 8 mb broadband for 17.99 per month.

They have a monthly limit of 30 gig bandwidth but only between peak hours, which is 6 pm to 11 pm every day.

Outside of those hours you download as much as you like which for a serial site rapist like myself is a Godsend.

I've already been booted off BT, AOL and Eclipse for 'abusing' their 'unlimited' services but so far Tiscali are ok. They sent me an email telling they were going to cap me between 6 and 11 as I downloded 3 times more than my 30 gig allowance but said to me I can download literally as much as I want as long as I do it through the night, which is good enough for me.

For under £18 for 8 mb with a truly unlimited service (outside peak hours) I think it takes some beating.

Take it from someone who knows

    Time Warner.

Don't ask me about speeds and all that stuff, I just know that with FlashGet I can download about 3 files at once with speeds of up to 820mb I noticed that the other night. In one night I've downloaded upto 30 fights with being on the high side of the speed, megarotic is usually shit! and I'll do speeds of about 150mb.

It's original price is $49.99 but since I also have my cable with them I get $10.00 off so I pay $39.99.

So can you download between 6 and 11? If you can, what do they mean by capped and again, can I have NTL phoneline with Tiscali net? I like this price too but is it a good service?

Man,I really do need to update my net don't I? For example,I'm downloading a 1.4gig file right now and I've been waiting 2 days for it because my speeds just aren't good enough even though there are plenty of seeders and leechers!

You can download between 6 and 11 but you will get in trouble if you download more than 30 gig of data between those hours in a month.

It's not so bad though, virtually all other ISP's in the UK now have a 40 or 50 gig total limit which means you cannot download more than that at any time.

I got booted from AOL for that reason.

Tiscali let you download as much as you like as long as its outside the hours of 6 and 11. If you download a lot then you need to be with someone who allows this.

I average around 250 gig of bandwidth usage a month so for £17.99 that is a fucking bargain even if I do have to pause my downloads during the evenings.

Oh! I see now! My 2MEG and the reason I've stuck with it is because I download so much and it's infinite download! I don't get capped! Hmmmm, this is a double edged sword because I download ALOT and I download 24-7.

Hmmm,I'm not sure what do to do guys....

you can get faster speeds and it is cheaper if you are in a cabled area, i used to be on plusnet a few years ago they were brilliant, they even had a back up free dial up line if the broadband was down in your area, im not sure why i didnt give them a ring when i got the internet set up again

Generally faster broadband is a double edged sword. In the UK we have the one of the shittest and most backwards infrastructures for broadband in the entire developed world. In order for companies to be able to offer ultra fast services they need to ensure that no other customers are actually using the service and slowing it down!

So the faster the service offered the harsher the restrictions replaced on how much and and at what time you can actually download are. Ironically a plain old 2 mb connection can actually be the best connection to have as you pretty much just get left alone as your not draining resources like an 8 mb user.

Think hard about upgrading if right now you are able to download as much as you'd like when you like. Moving upto 8 mb might suprise you. You will get immense download speeds upto 800 k a second BUT those speeds will only be reached in the early hours of the morning. During peak times when you are most likely to be actually using it they usually cap you to actually less than 200 k a second!

I signed up with Eclipse and my 8 mb broadband was actually only 50 k second (1/2 a meg!!!) between waking hours and reached max speed for about 10 minutes a day at about 4.55 am

The rest of the time it was slower than dialup

It is wise to emember the Aseop fable about the dog and the bone before being lured and seduced by the promises of all that speed.

Can anyone in the UK explain to me why is it that you have restrictions? On downloading times and limits?
    I don't get it?
