Default Pavliks Jab and Composure were the real story.

In the early rounds, I was shocked at how much slower Pavlik is than Taylor. Even when Pavlik one rounds 1 and 3, I though Taylor would get him with his clear speed and defensive superiority. From rounds 2-4, I kept waiting for JT to put a hurt on Kelly. But Pavlik's jab, even in rounds he lost on judges cards, like 5-6, was the story of the fight. Taylor had no sense of range and distance and he couldn't adjust to the lenght and consistancy of Pavlik's jab. Like the CW says, a jab can be the solution to speed and on that night, it was for Pavlik. Even though I was giving rounds to Taylor, I could feel the KO coming. Half the time, he was snapping back Taylors head completely unexpectedly. It was like Taylor couldn't believe he could get hit from that distance. Once those jabs had started to swell Taylors eye, he start letting go with his REAL right hand. Until about the 6th, he rarely threw that classic Pavlik straight right, or if he did, Taylor could react and roll enough to take most of the mustard off it. Once he had JT in control with his jab and started swelling the eye, it was just a question of time until the big right landed. And it did.

I agree, Pavlik was behind on the cards, but even when JT was winning rounds (other than the 2nd) Pavlik was more relaxed and more composed. Taylor was edging out of rounds, but as the fight progressed, you could see the power shot coming, and it was all set up by a jab, a jab that Taylor ate all night. For all the talk about Pavliks power, he was the real boxer-puncher that night. I love to see a rematch, but I suspect the result will be the same.

Kelly's jab had me thinking the same thing

I agree with Pavlik being more relaxed... I don't think I've ever seen a guy with Taylor's experience be so nervous. However it was Pavlik's ability to land his right hand that made him win not the jab which he did alright with, but his jab was slow getting back which let Taylor hit him with some very hard rights, and Taylor was able to counter his jabs many times with his much harder jab. THere is a reason Pavlik's nose was bleeding, and Taylor's wasn't, but his eyes were bulgy. Taylor really should have kept his hands up more, but he doesn't learn. Also it would be nice to see Taylor use some lateral movement, but with his footwork sometimes I wonder how he ever beat Hopkins.

I wasn't that Pavlik's jab was any better than Taylors, it was that Pavlik was hitting Taylor with jab at a range where Taylor thought he was safe and he was getting popped in the eye consistantly. That's why Pavlik was able to eventually land the right flush instead of having Taylor roll it off slightly. I think the bulgy eyes had had something to do with the jab as well as the right, and his ability to use his jab to counter Taylors much faster hands was the reason the right hand was able to close the fight.

But your are right, Taylor did a nice job of countering the jab, and he probably broke Pavlik's nose. Of course Taylor should have kept his hands up more. I wrote before the fight that Taylor would lose unless he kept his hands higher than he had been, and that was a big factor, as well.
