I tend to hiss out me mouth myself. I know a couple of guys who are blasting air out of their noses. I think it's a matter of preference to the boxer and what kind of mouthpiece they are using as well. Double mouthpieces have an air channel to facilitate better breathing through the mouth. Single guards are a little more prone to dislodging so those guys are probably blasting out their noses more.
The main purpose though is like Trainer Monkey said. It's like the boxing version of a kiyai. It helps you land your punches with more force and having less air in your lungs makes taking a body blow a lot easier. There's a bit more to it than that but that the basic gist of it.

Hmm.. Is it kinda hard to hiss out your nose if you throw a fast combination?

Yeah, I certainly haven't thrown a combination so fast that I couldn't keep up with my breathing....and I've been working on my hand speed a lot. The diaphragm does some wonderful work when it has to.

    Unrelated story but breathing/mindgames.
We play comp pool and this Greek fella from the opposing team bent over hands on knees and looked through the black ball right up my que stick into my eyes as I was going for the last shot!
I got it in after drawing attention to him and while the others all looked up the hall to what the prick was doing ,I potted it.
Later when he was shooting I asked him if he breathed in or breathed out when he makes contact and he missed .

    I can explain it.
But I cant understand it for you.
