Default Floyd Mayweather: Ring Magazine 2007 Fighter of the year

The Ring is pleased to announce that world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather has been selected as Fighter of the Year for 2007. Mayweather fought twice in ’07, winning a 12-round decision over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5 in Las Vegas to capture the WBC super welterweight title, and knocking out Ricky Hatton in the 10th round on December 8 in defense of the world welterweight championship.

It is the second time Mayweather has won the honor, having also been The Ring’s 1998 Fighter of the Year. The award dates back to 1928, when heavyweight champion Gene Tunney was the first recipient.

Other Ring magazine awards for 2007:

Fight of the Year: Israel Vazquez KO 6 Rafael Marquez II

Round of the Year: Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez II, Round 3

Knockout of the Year: Nonito Donaire KO 5 Vic Darchinyan

Upset of the Year: Nonito Donaire KO 5 Vic Darchinyan

Comeback of the Year: Paul Malignaggi

Event of the Year: Floyd Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya

the event of the year was HATTON mayweather. Good to see theres no bias from the rings new owner in making these awards.

Well, congrats to Floyd for what it's worth.

I would have thought the new MW champ Pavlik would have got a mention for something considering he beat the sh#t out of the most feared fighter in that division and then went on to beat the crap out of the undefeated MW in Taylor, back to back.

Calzaghe has 1 good win this year, Mayweather has 2, Cotto has 2, Pavlik has 3. It should of been Pavlik IMO.

I would say De La Hoya Mayweather was the EVENT of the year. It was a ''superfight''. Although not the best match this year I think it deserves event of the year. Hatton Mayweather is close though.
I think the fact that Mayweather beat a 154lb legend in DLH and an undefeated Ricky Hatton coupled with the fact that he was involved in 2 of the biggest events of the year make him the fighter of the year with Pavlik an extremely close 2nd for the opponents he steamrolled this year.

IMO pavlik should of gotten it, he took over his division with his own way. He has been more dominant coming from nobody to p4p elite class. This was pavliks year, not floyds. Just cause he had a fight with dela hoya and then one with hatton, doesn't give him the year of his career. This was the year of pavliks career that made him, it should of gone to him.

I gotta agree. Pavlik beat two real Middleweights that were supposed to be at the top of their game, knocking out both. Floyd beat an old Oscar who he was favored against and stopped Hatton, a jr. Welterweight who again he was favored against.

I think politics was involved in calling Hatton Mayweather the event of the year. Oscar clearly wanted to look impartial but the fact remains that De La Hoya Mayweather WAS the event of the year.

Ok clearly in the UK the Hatton fight was bigger but seeing as the De La Hoya fight did over DOUBLE the PPV's it is clear it was a much more popular fight around the world.

Plus it was competitive which Hatton Mayweather was not.

Good call on Floyd getting the award though. Fighting in and winning both of the biggest non heavyweight fights of all time HAS to be an award winning performance.

Floyd should have got the "Carefully Chosen Opponents Award"
