Calzaghe-Kessler came close, but Kessler wasn't a consensus Top 10 PFP guy, he was more like Top 15. Barrera-Marquez was the same thing. Barrera was highly regarded, but he wasn't a unanimous Top 10 guy.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2008, my current PFP list looks like this:
1. Mayweather
2. Pacquiao
3. JM Marquez
4. Calzaghe
5a. Hopkins
5b. Cotto
Those are my clear Top 6. Some people would put Calzaghe higher, and that's fine. But those are my Top 6. Now, we already know Pacquiao-Marquez will be fighting in March. Calzaghe-Hopkins will likely happen in April. And I'd say there's at least a 50% chance that we see Mayweather-Cotto before the end of '08.
If those 3 fights happen, that would mean that the top 6 PFP fighters all squared off against another Top 6 fighter in '08.
To stretch it out even further, one could argue that #7 and #8 PFP are Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez (Winky has a legit claim to be #7 or #8 as well). Vazquez-Marquez III is already set for March. So if you buy the theory that Vazquez and Marquez are #7-8, then that means the Top 8 PFP fighters could all face each other in '08.
I can't think of any other year where this has happened, and it could happen in 2008.
