Default Calzaghe more interested in Pavlik-Taylor winner than Jones

When Joe was asked for a potential showdown with Roy Jones, should he defeat Hopkins, the Welsh fighter was non-committal.

“I’m more interested in the winner of Taylor – Pavlik next to be honest. I’d rather fight a guy in his prime. They are the fights I get up for – big, big fights.”

I think fighting Jones will most likely lower his stock in being considered one of the best of his era. If he loses to roy then all his detractors will say that we told you all along and if he wins without a stellar performance then many will criticize him for not dominating an old shot fighter.
"Very few people really understand what it means to be a fighter. I hate it when I hear someone say, 'That fighter doesn't have guts. I hate that, I don't care if you're a world champion six times over or a four-round fighter, to step inside that ring, you have to have guts" Oscar De La Hoya

Good for Joe, glad he's thinking about legacy over money.

I'll say it now, if Calzaghe beats Hopkins and then if Pavlik beats Taylor again, a win for Calzaghe over Pavlik puts him into the top 20 of all time imo.

His record will be as good as Haglers imo.

If it comes off im sure Joe would have no problems getting back down to 168.

An honourable move in my book!
I had said, If Calzaghe beats Hopkins and decides to fight Roy Jones I wouldn't forgive him, so I'm relieved to hear this.

The only people that want to see Jones fight Joe are Jones fans, it's a no lose fight for Roy since he'd be a legend if he wins, asnd if he loses, what the hey he was shot anyway and Joe would be called a bully for facing him in the first place.

If the wins goto Joe and Kelly this spring , it's defo the next logical fight for both fighters, and the opponent dangerous enough to Joe for him to be motivated and not lose focus, it would also be a cracking fight.

I have to disagree. Beating Pavlik, although a tough challenge, would not be a huge task for a fast boxer. Bhop or Jones could beat Pavlik also in my opinion. Top 20 of all time is really giving him way too much credit. Kessler is a good fighter, so is pavlik, but they are far from considered great. Bhop was a great middleweight at "one time".

At this point none of them are great. They are nice notches to have on a belt, but "greatness" gets thrown around way too much these days IMO.

Please don't even mention Joe in the same breath as Hagler. Hagler did fight great fighters, over the long haul. Joe skirted through what was for many years one of the weakest divisions in the sport fighting unheralded guys time and time again. He stayed there also when he did not have to. Hagler fought the wolves, for many years and Kessler and Pavlik are just not on that level yet.

Im all about a fighter moving forward against prime opponents.Maybe it's my not so thrilled feelings about Roy's clamouring to be relivant again..(he's living on memories Imo) but IF and that is an immense IF,Joe best's Hopkins I'd like to see him fight the current crop....they still have tomorrows and that will add to Joe's resume and legacy as opposed to Jones who is an all time great but at this point is just trying to solidify his own legacy.

Hopkins IS a great in any era and if your only as good as your last fight,He's still very damn good,Calzaghe is looking to reach that acclaim and will most likely give Hopkins his most unplesant experience in recent memorie.Im picking hopkins w.12,and then he should call it a career.

Jone's needs to get in line and meet and defeat a top ten guy.Tito win was a step but We all need to take a breath and put it in Fool perspective.

You maybe underestimating Pavlik a little . Joe likes to get involved and against a lights out hitter it coul;d be his downfall .

I think Jones would bring him more money and in terms of legacy eh could say he beat teh best guy of his era . Jones name on his record will look better than Taylors in 50 years time.

how about this- JC takes Hopkins to school, then takes on Pavlik and puts on another boxing master class and then has one last fight in wales with RJJ..

It would give RJJ a chance to fight another decent name while Cazaghe takes on Pavlik and set up one last hurrah for both fighters in which they would both make a packet load..

For the record Calzaghe would Defeat Jones as well and go down as a top 30 ATG.

    Thats the plan anyway

Of course he would be...It is a bigger fight and better for his legecy...At this poiont and time fighting RJJ is just to say it happened....lets not get crazy because RJJ looked decent against tito...he is past his best days...a win over a young Pavlik or a Taylor who is just two fights removed from being undisputed MW champion is a much bigger feather in the cap of JC
