Default Fernando Vargas vs Ike Quartey Underrated Fight.

This was a great fight IMO and one of the most underrated fights out of Vargas/Tito/ODLH era. At least 2 rounds in this fight were candidate for rounds of the year. Quartey is one of my favorites but i have to admit i was shocked he got out jabbed by Vargas, Vargas looked damn impressive in this fight.

Quartey has always been a favorite of mine as well. Quartey had been on the sidelines for over a year. I think the rust is what led to him being out jabbed. The 9th round was a great round.

Agreed with everything you said plus i think Vargas was a little too big for Quartey, because this was at Jr Middleweight. One thing i never understood though is why Quartey retired for 5 years after the Vargas fight ??

Not sure what you mean to be honest, just because you loved the fight doesn't mean it isn't underrated. I can assure you this is very underrated fight and probably the less talked about fight of the ODLH/Tito/Vargas era. In fact since i've been here i haven't seen anyone talk about this fight.

This fight is overlooked because it happened in the same year as Morales-Barrera I, Trinidad-Vargas, and Mosley-DLH I. Great fight, the most impressive performance of Vargas' career.

Quartey was a very successful businessman outside of the ring, so he didn't need the constant paychecks. He was also a very cocky and stubborn guy, so he wasn't going to fight unless it was a big money fight. After getting the bad decision against Oscar and losing to Vargas, there were no real big money fights for him.

Quartey really had a tough luck career. He got a draw against Lopez in a fight that most people thought he won. He signed up to fight Whitaker in a big money fight in '98 that got cancelled when Whitaker got arrested for drugs. Then he loses the controversial decision to Oscar (I thought Quartey clearly won), then loses the tough fight to Vargas. 5 years later comes back and gets robbed against Forrest.

I guess your right i forgot about the other great fights of 2000, i also didn't know about Quartey being successful businessman. As for ODLH vs Quartey i don't know what your exact scoring was but i personally had Quartey 3 points ahead after 11th round, and at the end of the fight i had Quartey winning by 1 point. I thought it was a close fight but i thought the rounds were quite easy to score IMO.

I would have loved to have seen Quartey vs Whitaker, as you know Whitaker is one of my favorites. But i don't know if i would have liked to have seen the faded 98 version of Whitaker vs prime Quartey if im honest. I have Lopez vs Quartey and i thought Quartey clearly won majority of the first 9 rounds. Lopez come on strong in later rounds but it wasn't enough to make up for the big lead Quartey had.

Cocky is an understatement. Quartey has a statue of himself outside a hotel he owns in Ghana.

I saw the fight much the same way you did. Most close fights have a lot of close rounds, but that fight didn't. I thought Ike clearly won 7 rounds, Oscar clearly won 4 rounds, and there was one round that was up for grabs. But no matter who you gave that one round to, Quartey would still be ahead on the scorecards.

There should have been a rematch, not just because it had a controversial decision, but also because it was a very entertaining fight that people would have wanted to see a second time.

I think Quartey would have beaten Whitaker if that fight had come off. He would have been too big, strong, and active for Whitaker at that point. It probably would have looked a little bit like Trinidad vs. Whitaker.

I remember Vargas says he was in the best condition of his life for that fight. He said they made him watch everything he ate, he could not even have ketchup.

Quartey v Oba Carr was a very good fight too.

This was great fight and both were great fighters also. Bad thing for Vargas that Tito finished his career early.

Good fight but i don't know what that one judge was watching, didn't he have the fight even ?? i thought Quartey whooped Carr's ass for first 9 rounds. Carr comeback strong in later rounds but he still lost the last round, plus the knock down in the 11th was BS Carr hit him on the back. Larry Merchant made good point when Arthur Mercante deducted a point from Quartey for holding Carr's head down as i remember right, he said Ali done that about 50 times against Frazier but Mercante never even warned Ali. Yet Quartey done it only once and got a point deducted. But as for the fight itself i gave Carr 3 or 4 rounds can't remember exactly, but that one judge who had it even couldn't have been watching the fight.
