    Default ideal body fat %

    Hey Everyone,

I'm thinking about getting started with boxing at 31. I've done some martial arts and I've thought about getting back into that, but I've always wanted to box and I need the competition to motivate me and channel stress. Right now, I'm 5'10" 205, but I'm not in great shape right now, but I know how to get back in shape if I need it. Two years ago, with a 14% bodyfat, I was 178. I could do three sets of 10 dips with a 25lb weight added and chinups in sets of 12, 10, and 6. I could do very intense cardio and whole body exercises. My diet was good and I hit the gym 4 times per week on average. I hit a plateau with weight loss around 180 (I stepped on the scales a few times at 175). I could get stronger, build more endurance, etc, but my body didn't seem to want to go much below 180. I felt very good at that weight.

Now to my point - what is the BFP of a typical light heavy and super-middle weight fighters? Can you be "in shape" for boxing at 12-15% body fat?

oh i see. well to put it into perspective for you, jef "left hook" lacy (who has been a light heavy, but is apparently going to heavyweight) was at 17% and he looks ripped as hell. James toney on the other hand was about 5000% last i saw him as light heavy, the guy clearly helped his mumma out at the pie testing shop for a couple of weeks

id say ideally 8-12% mainly becuase most "ideal" males are supposed to be around 10-14, and if you workout regularly you will be under that and plus if you were a smart boxer youd want low body fat so that you can box a lighter weight class

theres no way u're looking ripped at 17%... Im about 8-10 in my avatar above. Im about 8-10 currently, trying to get down to 6% probably gonna weigh in around 197.

theres 3 common ways to get ur BF checked

digital scale - extremely inaccurate dont do it

calipers - about 3-5% margin or error, you have to get someone who really knows how to use them to get a good measurement. Although, its a MUCH better choice than the digi scale.

water test - if u can find a place to do it. its got about a 1% margin of error.

Average is apparently 20% for men, 30% for women. Not healthy though

The lowest possible body fat you can get without compromising on a) Health b) strength c) endurance etc is the best for you! It means you can fight at lower weights and your not carrying excess weight. Jameel McCline was at 3% BF for the Klitschko fight and he got wiped out embarrasingly! If your happy at 14% thats cool.

If anyone needs help on loosing body fat and diets pm me

as for pills, im trying out Hot Rox and there quiet good
