almost all the things you do in a boxing gym increase your speed and footwork.
mitts, shadow, bag, weights, skip, spar and all the other stuff
now the secret is to do it all allot and get experienced, rhythm and get your timing right.
if your a beginner and your trainer doesn't want you to spar.
you can still get in the ring with a partner. .

standing in range to land a jab. and follow the movement of your oppost. try to hold this distance.
when he moves forward you walk back, when he turns you turn with him, and hold the distance
throw a jab occasional to see if your still in range.

this is a great workout for beginners to get that footwork going on.
and you get used to standing in the ring.
when standing there you'll see the corners, now keep in mind to stay out of them!!!
when he moves forward (and you back) try to feel where the corners are, and when he forces you to go back and you get near a corner turn out of it.

just train, and speed comes along with your footwork.
keep in mind to alway throw with explosive power, and pull your punch back as fast as you can into defence. (same straight line as it went out.)

even when you get tyred, just throw a little less punches, focus on keeping your hands up, and when you throw make it explosive!!, I've seen people at my gym who get tired and try to hit hard. and the punch becomes more a push then a punch. witch tyre them even more and leaves them open for a long long time

    hope this helps a little

For fast punches make sure you keep you arms relaxed and loose and move your whole body with the punch.

    Shadowboxing will help your speed.

Stretching when you're not working out will help.

Remember that when you punch, you want snap it out there, and pull it back in very quickly.
