WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will make the first defense of his belt on March 21, 2009 against mandatory challanger Juan Carlos Gomez from Cuba. The 12 round title affair will take place at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer Halle in Stuttgart, Germany. “I’m sorry for Vitali,” said Gomez. “That he has to lose his title affter such a short reign. But I worked long and hard to get this shot and I will win the world championship.” “The victory over Sam Peter and the WBC belt still feel amazing,” said Klitschko. “I won’t let anybody take it away from me. Gomez is a very experienced, quick and dangerous oppponent. I won’t underestimate him. But the belt will stay in the Klitschko family.” The Klitschko-Gomez clash will be televised by RTL in Germany and HBO in the USA.
