Default Margarito Suspended !!!Trainer Javier Capetillo also suspended

Following is a statement by Tim Noonan, Chairman of the California Athletic Commission, regarding Antonio Margarito:
“The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has temporarily suspended the licenses of Antonio Margarito and his chief corner man, Javier Capetillo. The temporary suspension will remain in effect until CSAC has fully investigated the circumstances surrounding events at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 24, 2009. A foreign substance was found by California State Athletic Commission staff in the hand wraps of Antonio Margarito before his bout against Shane Mosley at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The substance found in Margarito’s hand wraps is currently being analyzed by the California Department of Justice. An investigation as to whether either licensee violated CSAC rules is ongoing. Mr. Margarito and Mr. Capetillo have been asked to appear at an initial hearing scheduled for February 10, 2009.”
“The licenses of Mr. Margarito and Mr. Capetillo were suspended pursuant to Business and Professions Code section 18842, which allows for the temporary suspension of a license when such an action is necessary to ‘protect the public welfare.’ CSAC Rule 323 limits the amount and type of gauze and tape allowed under a fighter’s boxing glove. Rule 390 allows CSAC to discipline a licensee when his or her actions are a “discredit to boxing” or violate the rules of CSAC.
“Commission staff will have no further comment until such time as the Commission makes a final determination of whether licensee actions in this case warrant fines, suspensions, or the revocation of licenses. The Commission has asked Mr. Margarito and Mr. Capetillo to appear at an initial hearing currently scheduled for February 10, 2009.”

if Margaritos is found guilty then let him rot in whatever punishment is given...if he is not suspend Nazim Richardson and make sure he issues a public apology to Margarito and his trainer.

Why da hell should Nazim Richardson get suspended & have to issue a public apology, that's some bullshit. Whatever was there was something that he as an opposing trainer wasn't happy with & everyone seems to accept he was within his rights to object to it & if he feels they were using illegal substances he ain't got to apologize for shit, even if Margarito is cleared of wrongdoing, because his concern is the safety of is fighter.

Funny how Richardson is the only trainer to have seen this mysterious substance in the last 20 years. Life I wrote in my other thread this MAY have been a ploy by Ricahrdson to throw off Margarito's whole corner...now he's suspended, his trainer is suspended, and his reputation is taking a beating.

Not a fair shake if this wasnt true.

Are you serious I guess they just confiscate nothing, investigate hot air from opposing trainers, and suspend right doers. Use one iota of common sense. The commission and a doctor witnessed Margarito's handwraps being undone and the plaster falling out. What more has to happen before you stop accusing everyone but the cheater? Oh yeah, OJ didn't commit murder either it was a big conspiracy.

apology for what?? Nazim doesnt do that to everybody so far he has only done it to Tito and Margarito. its obvious something was up he had to wrap his hand 3 fukkin times.

Surprisingly the two fighters he suspected were coincidentally fighters that could have on any given day beaten his fighter. Tito was favored to beat B-Hop and likewise was Margo.

as far as the wraps, the reason they were rewrapped three times was not because of this plaster stuff, this is from Ring Magazine's article:

Shortly before the fight was set to begin, Naazim Richardson, Mosley’s astute trainer, was doing his duty by watching carefully as Javier Capetillo, Margarito’s trainer, wrapped the hands of his fighter.

At first, Richardson complained that Capetillo was taping too far down Margarito’s wrist and a commission official made him re-tape it several times. Then, when it came time to place a protective gauze pad over the fighter’s knuckles, Richardson felt it and could tell immediately that it was harder than usual.

Also, Robert Olvera, Mosley’s doctor, reportedly noticed a flaky substance on the pads that reminded him of the plaster doctors use to make casts.

“From there, I said, ‘Listen, this isn’t cool,’” Richardson said.

The pads were impounded by the California State Athletic Commission, which is conducting an investigation

No where does it say that "a plaster substance fell out of the wrap" as one poster was implying on here, or that he had to rewrap specifically because of this substance.

At this point I dont know what I am hoping for more, that Margo didnt have anything and it was a ploy by Richardson or that Margo did have it and Richardson was stating the obvious.

    The key is Self-discipline.

They did take some evidence from whatever it was that fell out his glove that is suppose to be some kinda plaster. We will find out soon i guess but if it is true then his whole career is tarnished IMO.

what was taken was the wrap, regardless of the outcome it will not be good for his record. Thats why I am almost hoping that he did have something because if not it was Richardson who put this on him.

What does that have to do with anything? So because Richardson or whoever made them rewrap their hands they all of a sudden couldn't fight? It kind of looked like Tito and Tony were throwing punches to me. Favored does not equal lock and the substance found in Margarito's hand wraps have nothing to do with any head games Richardson may or may not have been playing. Let's wait for the official ruling and then see if you can spin that. Stop being such a fanboy and use common sense.

    Here's Tony's career:

    Oops

The troublesome part isnt that Margarito got suspended,he was going to take a 30 day for the TKO anyway, his trainer getting suspended is a surprise.

The tragedy of Collins and Resto, and what it could mean for Margarito

by SC on Jan 30, 2009 4:15 AM EST in News

For anyone that thinks people that are concerned are maybe getting a bit too crazy about the Margarito wraps controversy, tell Billy Collins Sr. about it. I know I said the other day that we "didn't have to" get into this again, but maybe we do. Maybe it's best to bring up the horrible, tragic story of this infamous fight. Just under 25 years ago, his son, Billy Jr. (pictured right), died near Antioch, Tennessee, when he drove his car off of a cliff. The unbeaten prospect hadn't fought in nine months, because he couldn't fight anymore. Nine months earlier at Madison Square Garden, Collins had been beaten so severely that the injuries suffered in the fight ruined his eyesight and halted what had been a promising career.
That night in New York -- June 16, 1983 -- Collins was to face Luis Resto, a light-punching, six-year pro of little note. Resto came into the fight with a 20-8-2 record, with eight knockouts. Collins was -- and still is -- 14-0 with 11 KOs.
Resto so thoroughly battered Collins that it still strikes me as almost inhuman that Collins survived the fight without being knocked out. If you really want to see the fight, which is hard to watch, it is available online. Perhaps to truly understand the weight of the issue in the ongoing case, it has to be seen.
After the fight, Collins' dad, Billy Sr., went to shake Resto's hand, and immediately noticed something wrong. He held on to Resto's glove, as Resto tried to shake Collins' grip loose.
"All the padding's out of the goddamn glove!" the senior Collins shouted.
The New York State Athletic Commission seized the gloves, took them in for evidence, and soon enough, the verdict came back: Luis Resto and Panama Lewis were found guilty of tampering with the gloves, removing padding from each hand.
On July 1, Panama Lewis had his license revoked in the state of New York, and he never had an official role in another American fight. Resto was suspended for a year, and he never fought again.
In 1986, both Resto and Lewis were put on trial, and both were convicted of assault, conspiracy, and criminal possession of a weapon. Each man did two and a half years in prison.
Lewis to this day maintains that he didn't do anything, and that he's been banned unjustly for all these years. Resto, meanwhile, has lived rent-free in a basement of a boxing gym in New York, and after 15 years of efforts to get his license back in the state so that he could work corners, he was allowed to do so.
The former pug, now 48 years old, revealed in 2007 that not only had Lewis removed padding (and that he was aware of it), but the trainer had also soaked Resto's handwraps in plaster. The effect was, essentially, what Billy Collins Jr. reported during the fight: it was like he was being hit with bricks. The hand wraps had never even been investigated.
Resto went to the home of Collins' widow to apologize to her, saying he had been burdened by guilt for 25 years. He also admitted the full story of what had happened, including the plaster treatment of the wraps. He visited Collins' grave and said, "I'm sorry for what I did to you."
He also said it wasn't the first time that Lewis had tampered with his gloves.
Speaking with Wallace Matthews of Newsday, Billy Collins Sr. gave a rare interview yesterday. In it, he said the following:

    following:
"Shane Mosley was a lot luckier than my son was. At least they found out before the fight. Before he got hit with anything."
"They say time heals all wounds. That's a big old lie."
    About the Cotto-Margarito fight:
"I knew Margarito was doing something. Cotto was beat up worse than my son was. He was cut up all to pieces. You can't do that kind of damage with a glove."
Here's the real point when discussing this fight in comparison. It's true that right now we don't know for sure -- only the guys investigating at the CSAC, Margarito, and Capetillo know for sure.
But if it comes back as bad as we can fear, Margarito will likely be finished. Capetillo will likely be finished. And it might be years -- decades, even -- before we ever know the full story, if we ever really do.
Again, I hate this story. I wish we could all just move on and talk about what else is going on in the sport, and praise Shane Mosley for his win, and keep moving forward. But this is going to cloud the entire sport until February 10, when the CSAC holds its hearing.

The link below shows the story and a picture of Collins, I believe there are other links from the site
