    Smile Can Gomez beat Burns?

I don't think there's even room for debate here. Its time to face facts...

Gomez IS totally shot (one lucky punch against Khan doesn't prove otherwise)!
His punches are slow, laboured and off-target these days.
He used to take 3 shots to land one but now seems to just take 3 shots....
    His stamina is appalling.
He hasn't been over 6 rounds for nearly 8 years!!
He hasn't beaten a fighter with a winning record for 5 years.

I think to keep putting him in these kinds of fights is just beginning to get a little obscene. Its great for Michael's bank balance but the effects on his health are apparent to all but his most blinkered supporters.

Michael may get stopped on his feet but he WILL get stopped in this fight for sure.

Burns should be a 1/10 shot going by your "facts", Fatsandman

Gomez seems up for this. And he does still make for good fights.

I too think Burns, although a powderpuff hitter, will stop him late as he tires.

Red face Re: Can Gomez beat Burns?

Gomez is always up for every major fight he's involved in. Just because he's 'up' for a fight doesn't mean that any of the things I mentioned above are false or that his skills will somehow return for the night. Heart and desire are things that Michael has always had going for him. That is the main reason Gomez is still such a big draw.

But I really can't pick out one of the points I made above as not being a fact..

Personally I would have Burns a massive favourite in this fight..

Gomez will be fucked after four or five rounds. All Burns has to do is stay out of trouble till then. I do like to watch Gomez fights though even though he's a pale shadow etc.

Personally, I think that Gomez does have a reasonable chance of succeeding at this, and here's why.

Despite the fact his last big win was in '04 against Kirakosyan, Gomez does have power, and had very entertaining bouts both against Khan and Johanneson, and will still have the stamina to fight for 6-8 rounds, and will be hoping it doesn't go beyond then to be honest.

In Alex Arthur and Carl Johanneson, both of Ricky's defeats have come against domestic fighters who pack a bit of a punch, and I would suggest that perhaps he'll have a few punches that will trouble Burns.

2/1 Burns to win by stoppage has to be a decent bet.

I think Gomez will see the end of this one... but will prob lose via UD

If he does get stopped then he would seriously need to think about packing in

That finish was like Mosley vs Margarito . You could see Burns putting everything into every shot he threw . I was quite impressed considering he had only KO'd 5 guys previously

Yes great bet that mate Gomez cant fight 12 rounds, 2/7 was a mortgage job for a Burns win if i was a big betting man i would of had some of that.

Yeah I was impressed. Its always good to see a young fighter with not much power try to take an opponent out . He could have just boxed all night but its good to see a bit of devil .

As for Gomez I knew he was a warmed up corpse before he took on Khan. I saw Gomez getting knocked out by Lazlo Bognar years ago. I was also there for the rematch which he won so I know that even though he isnt the most talented , he will still give it a go. He gave it his best last night but as he admitted he hasnt got it anymore. When he fought Johansson he got badly knocked out aswel so he has nowhere to go. At the finish I thought he should have been given a count . Fair enough if the ref stopped it when he got up but atleast give him a chance. Gomez went down on a knee to buy some time. and the ref robbed him of it. He was on Burns' case too much aswel that ref was.

Burns doesnt want to go anywhere near Rocky Martinez. Gomez can have a couple of easy wins and go out on 50.

I agree that Burns was much the better fighter last night, and was landing with fluency and accuracy making Gomez look pondering.

However, I thought the ref was justifiably on his back as Burns did seem to have his arms all over Gomez whenever they came close.

The one gripe I would have is that the first punch of the final flurry which did for Gomez looked well dodgy for me. Burns had his left forearm across Gomez' neck pushing it back, then held it there as he threw the biggest right he'd thrown all night. He'd already been warned for use of the forearm earlier in the fight as well, and it just brought the end forward a few minutes.
