    Default Henry Allingham dies

Probably of all the people who have died recently maybe Allingham deserves the biggest tribute of all.

The world's oldest man, the last surviving founder member of the RAF and the world's last remaining serviceman from World War 1.

He was born in 1896!!!! That's fucking insane, just over ten years after the Jack the Ripper murders!

This man must have had some fucking life story, imagine having him as your grandad!

He's got a book out I believe so I may well order a copy from Amazon and see what this great man witnessed in his long long life.

RIP Henry Allingham, you will be missed.

That's crazy, never heard of him before or if I have its slipped my mind.

I actually thought about this a few weeks ago, about which periods would really be crazy to live through. Say you lived to be a 100, you were born in the US in 1850 and died in 1950. You would have seen the end of slavery ,the civil war, the further growth of the country, industrialization, etc., the invention of the telephone, electric light bulb, the car, tv, etc., etc. The world would have changed completely, electricity, cars, suburban life, etc. You would have seen the civil war, Spanish-American War, World War 1, rise of Hitler and World War 2.

And that's leaving out a lot. You would have seen the complete transformation of a country, the world really. Kind of an amazing.

Incredible that. You think of someone in their 70's as ready to pass away at any time and there he was still around 40 odd years later. Totally mad!

I recall him being on the BBC some time ago, I thought he was pretty cool then writing books at his age.

All this talk about war veterans reminds me of the Queen Mother, who bravely remained at the side of her husband in London during the Blitz. This makes me somewhat ashamed of my own grandfather, who (at the first sign of war) ran off to Dunkirk, North Africa and Normandy - leaving his pregnant wife to remain behind.
