    Default USC football's in trouble

ESPN's reporting a 2 year bowl ban (), loss of scholarships (not out yet, I've heard 20 over 3 years which is big) and forfeitures (who cares really.)

That's pretty rough, and I say that as a fan of a team that excels at cheating.

In the end the scholarships are the biggest deal, long term wise, and 20 over 3 years, if that's true, is a bigger deal than what it sounds like. It takes a while to recover from that and rebuild depth.

I could have put this on the college football thread but this probably deserves its own for how bad the penalty is and how big USC is.

NCAA hands USC two-year bowl game ban, major scholarship reduction in football - latimes.com

More than 20 scholarships And "limited recruiting contacts" is a possibility, not even sure what that exactly entails but it doesn't sound good. This screams lack of institutional control, you can't get much worse than these penalties without getting the death penalty.

Really though FUCK USC and there huge legions of fairweather fans. I mean it's not even a problem right now since USC sucked last year. They don't get to see Matt Barkley is another bowl game, that's excellent. I bet half these clowns who root USC will now become UCLA fans or something.

Now we know why Carrol left, what a prick. I'm glad he came into the 9ers division to suck though! This is great, how excellent.

I thought you might like this.

This sounds actually worse than ours was.

Because I really enjoy a good meltdown I googled USC football forums and found this wearesc.com place, just fantastic fantastic stuff.

One thread title I especially liked: "Its time for the USC power brokers and lawyers to bring down the NCAA."

Hahah quite a few Cal/UCLA fans in there uniting. There's also a thread on the South Carolina democratic gubernatorial candidate? I don't know. I might be at wearesc for a few hours...

I like how they are blaming Bush. I always liked Bush even though he went to USC, now I know why

    What did they do?

On a related note, as a Canadian I find the American exuberance for College/University sports utterly baffling.

I like all sports, it's youngblood who likes college football better then the NFL. Go to the south though and they make a huge deal out of high school football too, just the way it is. I like it though, college football is it's own brand of awesome.

They gave Reggie Bush's parents a house, or something like that I don't know I just know he was getting hooked up fat going to college which is a no-no. NCAA football players should be paid. Just like any other on campus job you get, even the student assistants to the team get paid enough to get by but these guys generating bajillions for the schools don't. Not fair imo.

There had to be more though, I mean Joe McKnight was rolling around in luxury cars too so I really doubt it was only Bush.

It seems logical to me that they should get paid, considering the amount of time they must have to dedicate to the sport. Though I suppose getting to bang almost anyone you wanted at a school of 40,000 people would be payment enough for some. Couldn't all colleges just agree to some kind of flat salary for all football athletes or something, wouldn't that eliminate any sort of prospective recruiting inequities (which I assume is the reason they don't get paid)?

Well the rationale is that they get a free education, which at all schools is expensive and at some schools is absurdly expensive. And the thing is if they get paid something their's still going to be "friends of the program" willing to give them something extra.

college football is bigger than NFL where I'm from, partly because we don't have a pro team. But college football is big pretty much everywhere now. High School football is huge in Texas and big some other places in the south but I don't give a shit about that, I haven't watched a high school football game since I played high school football.

But especially in the small town south its big cause that's the town's team. I'm from the south but have never lived in a small town.

I've heard and read quite a lot about the rivalry Auburn/Crimson Tide, apparently it sticks when you're young and from there it,s a never look back and this allegiance is VERY important and will shape a part of who you do frequent. I've also read how this is so important that it did split some family apart. Crazy.

Eh, its a big rivalry but the splitting families stuff is more of a cliche, I mean it can I guess but only really goofy families. And anyway Auburn fans are all trash so there's no reason to start a family with one.

This is so bad that I almost feel bad for them. Not Kiffin though.

Just to put it in perspective, Alabama went on probation in 2002, and it was bad, very bad, ruined the program to some degree for a while (bad coaching hires didn't help) and that was 21 scholarships over 3 years.

This is pretty much the death penalty since they really won't use the actual death penalty anymore.
