I'm kind of interested in what our more socialist leaning members think of what the Sandinista's did to this great boxing hero?

One of the best technical fighters out there, and one of the gentleman of boxing. Never lost a title once he won it, and he had amazing fights against.

    Ruben Olivares
    Aaron Pryor x2
    Ray Mancini
    Andrew Ganigan
    Jose Luis Ramirez
    Cornelius Boza Edwards
    Bobby Chacon
    Rafael Limon
    Alfredo Escalera x2

Those fights were real classics, Alexis Arguello was always a treat to watch R.I.P Alexis Arguello.

I have seen the Mancini and Pryor fights but after reading that article I think I need a serious download and recap session ICB. I'll use your list as a get go man thanks.....

Andrew Ganigan was like Edwin Valero a little bit, he had Alexis Arguello down and hurt quite badly. He was a pretty big puncher, it was a great 5 round war. The Ruben Olivares fight is probably top 10 best Featherweight fights of all time, and the Alfredo Escalera fights were brutal.

One last thing i'd like to see your opinion on Jose Luis Ramirez vs Alexis Arguello, as much as i like Alexis Arguello may he R.I.P. I thought Jose Luis Ramirez nicked that one IMO.

ICB, I love info like that, helps me fill in the many many holes that exist in my boxing history. Thanks. I'm searching for fight downloads as we speak...... Hopefully I can find that specific fight to watch on my train journeys and let you know my thoughts.

Everyone should probably catch up on his fights i reckon if they haven't already...

When it cane to political, AA was way in over his head and eventually was put in a place where he had run out of viable options (at least as he saw things). He then committeed suicide.

You watch the HBO documentary about the situation Homlcall man??. Insightful to say the least if you didn't. I think I provided a link to it in the FS section....... he was certainly used in the political arena, by a man who had already betrayed him once, and betrayed him terriibly too. He obviously loved his country and saw the offer as a second chance to do his country proud, but he seemed to get f88ked for a second time round.....

The Sandinistas took all he had when he was in his prime, perhaps driving him to drug abuse, and when the Sandinistas needed credibility they used Arguello and once they had what they needed they threw him away like a piece of trash....lousy commie bastards!

Arguello's life reminds me a little of Joe Louis' life, which could have easily been made better with a Presidential pardon.

Alexis was a classy guy... and a wonderful boxer to watch. He beat local favorite Alfredo "El Salsero" Escalera in a couple of classic fights, and Puerto Ricans still loved the guy. I was devastated when he lost those fights to Aaron Pryor, another two classic battles. He sure is missed.
