Default So whatdid we learn saturday night?

-Hot prospect Jose Benavidez, no longer being trained by Freddie Roach took five rounds to dispose of a .500 fighter. That's two straight fights against less experienced guys without impressive outcomes. hmmmm
-Kelly Pavlik was either rusty (if you want to feel good about it) or lethargic and unimpressive against an very ordinary Tiger Lopez. Pavlik showed a decent left hook but no electricity. Kelly has a history of doing that. He shows one or two good things in a fight but never seems to put all the pieces together. My own view is Kelly's best is behind him.
-The fine Rodel Mayol continued his comeback from his loss to Omar Romero by beating a guy I'd never heard of. Romero is now up at 112 and the question is can he punch with those guys? Don't know. But given Wongjonkam's level of comp? What the hell, give Mayol a shot!
-Mike Alvarado really needs a test. This straight-line, wide open, just gonna bang away approach is fine against journeymen, but how about against a tough guy like Lucas Matthyse or a boxer like Joan Guzman (if he can make weight)?
-Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr. needs to learn to jab consistently and constantly. Little men should not be able to get close to him. Or he need to be taught to step to the side when rushed so he cannot be bulled to the ropes. The kid clearly has a future and there is no shame in losing to Arce. Question the wisdom of the old man's decision if you wish, but never his love for his son.
-Jorge Arce. What can be said? I thought Christian Mijares had ended him and I was sure Vic Darchynian had. Up until Round ten I thought this had been perfect matchmaking by the Vasquez camp as the Cowboy was testing him but was just too small to really hurt him. Oooops! I was not at all suprised by Arce's passion (who could be at this point), but I was shocked by his proficiency. Now get back down to 118 or 115 where you belong!
-Shane Mosely is shot, but we knew that going in.
-Manny Pacquiao. Manny regressed badly last night and no it wasn't anything Shane did. Manny's balance, foot work and right hand were not what they have been since the Diaz fight. Overtraining? Father Time? Little of both? Just an off night (amazing how those tie in to early Father Time Syndrome isn't it?)? Something else? Don't know. But THAT Manny had better not show up against Floyd.

Where am I wrong and waddya got?

What I learned? Another Rican got his ass kicked by another Mexican. Seems like the theme of decades of boxing.

Father time is indeed catching up to Pac. I was at a fight party with my friend that paid for the PPV, my older bro was there with me. He said it looked like Hagler-Mugabi where you can see Hagler aging in that fight same with Manny-Shane. The reflexes and reaction time was slower. And just like Hagler in the Mugabi fight, Manny is 32 years old with lots of wear and tear in that body and over 55 fights to the resume.

Pavlik got some fucked up looking tats and no where near elite anymore.

    That is all.

That's a heck of an analogy. For the first time Hagler had to just outtough someone in John Mugabi. The skills had really faded. Watching that fight what you noticed was just how often he got hit. Marvelous had, up to that point, been a heck of a defender.

Similarly, Manny last night had his undiminished passion, but the skills acquired Diaz and since weren't there.

Not saying what I believe, but Manny claims that he was having trouble with his left leg and that is why he wasn't his "normal" self. Also, I thought his punch selection, when he threw, was pretty ridiculous. And I was impressed to an extent by Shane's reaction to Manny, Shane stated that he had "never been hit like that." Shane is normally considered to have an iron chin so for him to say that speaks volumes even if he is shot. Shane's excuse for why he didn't open up was “I didn’t open up because , you can get knocked out when you open up and take chances.”

Injuries are far more common in athletes as they age aren't they? I really think Father Time, if not yet speaking, is at least clearing his throat.
