This was one of my favorite fights of all time, George Foreman was still calling fights for HBO, and I believe up until the final round and KD he thought Trinidad was going to knock Hopkins out.

This fight was one of my best “upset picks” if you will. I was a fan of both fighters but no way I was drinking the kool-aid that Tito was a 3-1 or 4-1 fav in this fight. Everybody was so gaga over him destroying Joppy in the last fight and Hopkins having a tougher time with Holmes. All I was thinking was “of course he destroyed Joppy, because Joppy stood RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM” (What a great KO thou…). Hopkins started his career at Light Heavy, no way Tito was going to walk thru him.
My favorite part of this fight was Hopkins using the $200k he got from Golden Palace for putting that painted tattoo on his body and betting it all on himself to win LOL. Classic “Nard!!!![]()
... and the fact that bernard almost got himself killed at the press conference in puerto rico!
I didn't recall Tito being such a big favorite, I wish i'd bet some money on Hopkins. I remember Trinidad looking like a bobble head doll at times during the fight, especially when Hop would triple up on his jab and follow up with a straight right. Hopkins basically put on a clinic for 12 rounds and then topped it off with the KO, I was loving it.![]()
Fer sure, at the time I thought Hopkins was being classless, seems like he tore up a PR flag or some such shit. But in retro, this was just classic Hop, he succeeded in getting inside Tito's head, and then fought a masterpiece in the ring. I was a Hop fan before that, but the Tito fight showed me that Hopkins was a champion for a reason = he was damn good.

It's hard to remember who I picked to win that fight, i'm pretty sure though that I went with Hopkins, I know I wanted him to win, I was getting sick of Tito mania, and/or the way his fans were worshiping him at the time. Hopkins knows how to be a party pooper doesn't he... hahaha

I was shocked how little play Hopkins was given going into this one. Alot of people acted like Tito just had to show up off Joppy demolition and tap Hopkins on the chin a few times. Not this dude.
Love this breakdown and execution of a gameplan. One ya rewind over and over.
I remember the handwrapping incident with Tito's wraps. That Nazim knows how to look out for his fighters
Anyone notice how much higher Hopkins guard was back then. Its alot more relaxed these days. I think he had real respect for Titos power and thats why he was so focused. on hitting and not being hit.
Masterful display especially when you consider Tito demolished Joppy to win the middleweight title prior to that fight
