Ricky Hatton cites thoughts of suicide:

LONDON -- Former light-welterweight champion Ricky Hatton says he slipped into depression and considered suicide while trying to come to grips with his loss to Manny Pacquiao in May 2009.

The 32-year-old Hatton says his slip into drugs and alcohol worsened following the second-round loss to the Filipino boxer in Las Vegas.

Hatton told BBC radio the loss brought on thoughts of retirement and "I didn't cope with it very well ... I was so down, I was crying and breaking out and contemplating suicide."

Hatton says he experienced blackouts as he went on daylong drinking binges with depression engulfing him. He battled "to come to terms with" the defeat and his career winding down.

Hatton retired in July and has a promoting business.

Yeah I agree, it comes around to us all. I look at accomplishments a bit like stretching time out making it falsely feel lineal and longer but we all know deep down that whatever you do and whatever comes your way from it its one still one big learning curve .

just one thing, you know, depression doesnt correlate with lack of brains, it actually goes the other way - very intelligent people are more susceptible to depression and other mental illnesses, in fact, with many of our greatest scientists suffering from them. Brains wont help you escape a very real and debilitating condition. Social support is one thing that counteracts it well.

So its unfair to suggest Ricky is stupid and thus hes succumbed to depression. Just be careful how you color mental illness, it could be you one day and I hope you dont, but if you do, you can bet your boots you will see it very different from the way you do now - I just mean the orignal poster, not everyone, sorry ..I just realied I sounded aggressive there! I didn't mean to suggest that Hatton is stupid because he gets depressed, it's more about his admitted heavy drug usage and drinking binges, and the fact that he's never seemed like the sharpest tack in the box. Just guessing i'd say much of Hatton's "depression" was temporary and brought on by losing the fight to Pacquiao, the drugs & alcohol just fueled the already existing problem.

If very intelligent people are more susceptible to depression and other forms of mental illnesses, then i'd say there's a good chance that Hatton's is short term.

What many don't realise is hatton was a huge draw in america and respected cos he fought p4p number 1's.
Takes balls. They look at calzaghe as an opportunist because he hand picked his last 2 opponents also for paydays.
Hatton could have one this fight if he stayed back abit, I told people it is 50/50 and it will brutal either way

sorry to be presumptive, and yes I really do hope he recovers fully and it doesnt become a slippery slope!

personally I think Hatton wasnt stupid in comparison to Joe Calzaghe or other cherrypickers, he just really believed intaking on the best to become the best, and that is what competitive sport is all about at the end of the day. No point in being another Jack Dempsey (championship years, his manger drew the colour line), Calzaghe (1999-2006, by cherrypicking) or John L Sullivan (his whole life spent not fighting blacks, some of whom would have iced him) and only fighting half the eligible contenders, that makes you only half a world champion, which he already was - he wanted the whole pie. And fair play to him for trying when others knew they didnt have it in them to get higher than a portion of the world title. That is the stuff that makes REAL champions. If I ever was a boxer in real (reincarnated) life, I'd do the same unless I was so incapable of sorting my finances out that I had to cherrypick so as to get rich via the easiest route. Which is what Ricky has done, ironic given that people think hes dumb - he is light years ahead financially of the people who criticise him.

Hatton is probably Manic. He is very grandiose and is always seen and talks about living in excess at least in what he consumes.

Abusing your body and abusing drugs like cocaine and excess alcohol is going to strap a rocket engine on depression.

The nice think I observed about a Hatton is that he is a genuinely nice guy, so I hope he gets his life in order.

50/50? you've got to be kidding Drop, Hatton didn't have a prayer against Pacquiao, it was man against boy.
