Default Why do cornermen continue to tell their fighters they have the fight "WON"?

Anybody who has even a little knowledge of the history of boxing knows that when you're going against the favorite or more popular fighter, that you absolutely don't decide to go into cruise control in the last just because you feel you have the fight won.

We've seen this time and time again and boxers/cornermen never learn.

Winky Wright did it against Jermain.Taylor, now Marquez

bernard cruised against taylor twice...cause he thought he had won.

his record would look stellar had he not botched those two fights!

Hopkins had nothing left for Taylor, the style matchup messed him up in that fight. Put Hopkins in vs a boxer, boxer/puncher, or someone as cagey as he is but younger and I'll take the opponent anytime.

I think trainers say their fighter has won because they focus on more of the positive things their fighter is doing in the ring and are less apt to notice what the opponent is doing correctly, merely on how to counter it.

De la Hoya-Trinidad was another good example of a fighter cruising

Because when they're right, it can be strategically important. If Billy Conn had just stayed away from Joe Louis...or if Jersey Joe Walcott had stayed away from Rocky Marciano...or if Botha had stayed away from Grant...or if John Tate had stayed away from Mike Weaver...

It might also be because in some cases a corner man can't explain why there is a vulture at the top of the ring post.

I think corner men know the mental state of their fighter and if they say they are winning then they may be more relaxed and do better. If they were told they were losing they may react negatively and become rash and get knocked down and out.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
