When tapia was coming up, before he went to jail, he didn't fight as emotionally as he did later. He still had the great hook to the body but he boxed a lot and his punching accuracy was something to see. Not as much ink on his body either.

Yeah he had venom and heart.
My friend, an ex pro in his own right, makes a living selling framed pictures on street corners and at car shows, etc...He did a sale in Big Bear years ago and tapia came by. My friend got talking boxing with him and, out of no where, he started telling my friend about his mother's murder. He came away thinking that Tapia was a very troubled individual.
God bless him, he fought his heart out every time he stepped into the ring. An honest professional fighter.
One of the most down to Earth, lay it all out fighters. He was a weighted soul. Tremendous sharp shooting boxer who I think at prime and prep could succeed in any era. One of the top missed 'big' fights was he and Mark Johnson never clashing. The hand speed combined in that one would be off the charts and immeasurable
Tapia was a troubled guy, as a fighter he was mister excitement to watch, pity the drugs had
him in there grip and eventually they took him.
