Default Paul Smith challenges Arthur Abraham fight chat

I haven't seen anything about this fight yet so I thought I would start as it is a British fighter fighting for a world title in a highly respected weight class. Smith obviously has 2 big knockout losses in his career to Groves and Degale and this will probably be the main reason for Abraham wanting this fight as he hasn't had a knockout since Taylor. He isn't really a big puncher at the weight and we all know that Taylor tires down the stretch. AA is small at the weight and you can see at the face off that Smith does have the height advantage over him.

For Smith to win this he needs to take a leaf out of Frochs book who put on a clinical boxing display vs AA. AA doesn't work for every round and he likes to come forward with his turtle shell defence and work down his opponents. He is known for not starting fights quickly and this is where Smith needs to not waste too much energy but establish a lead. This is smiths third 12 round fight and he has never been in a world title fight compared to AA whos in his 19th world title fight I believe.

With the fight being in Germany this is obviously not the best thing for Smith but this is no doubt a once in a life time opportunity and I am sure that Smith knows he will never get another chance at this again. Smith can box well and does have a good amateur background and if everything goes his way you never know he could pull off the upset. I don't see him stopping AA though I think it would be a very close points decision IF Smith can pull it off. He needs to box for 12 solid rounds and be switched on if he is going to win this.

AA with his vast experience, being the champion and fighting in Germany is clearly the favourite no doubt at all about that. He claims he is super confident for this fight and is not underestimating Smith in the slightest, we all know what he is capable of doing. He is no where near as good as he use to be, but still I think he is more than likely a bit too much for Smith. I can see a late stoppage or points win for AA but again wouldn't count out Smith somehow winning it.

I think we have a good fight on are hands and Ive heard the winner has to fight Sturm or Steiglitz. Good luck to Smith though and I hope we can have another British champion, that would set up some brilliant matchs back home if he can secure that belt. I hope the scousers are in full voice in Germany .

I'm pretty certain i'm getting closer and closer to full blown nuts as i've contemplated actually putting dosh on Smith.

The last AA fight I watched he took a hiding off Steiglitz, I know he's reversed that since, but I still think of him as being well past it. Smith, although fighting nobdy "world-class" has looked pretty good since Groves ironed him out (no real disgrace in that). AA decisions are always pretty tight on the cards, so just maybe, if Smith doesn't get himself chinned out, he could nick it. AA is well beatable these days. Paul Smith Champion of the World.

Now back to the loony bin.

The lack of response to this thread show how much this fight is capturing the public's imagination! I like Paul Smith as a bloke, he's sound, but I genuinely can't see him going past 5 rounds. I also reckon his brother Callum would stand a better chance. I hope I'm wrong.

AA did revenge his loss to steglitz and at the end of that fight he looked strong

if smith wins it will be the biggest upset i can remember, since tyson douglass maybe

i am struggling to think of a bigger upset that i have watched since

and to the fella above, it isnt the most amazing fight but im looking forward to it

I only posted it before, but it has taken a while for somebody to post about it. Callum is a good prospect but hes still got a lot to learn, Paul as at the right age and experience level and being ranked 5 by the WBO means he does deserve a shot.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a shot. in this day and age when the boxing organisations make the rules up as they go along, there have been far less worthy contenders . And I am also pleased that he's (hopefully) making a good purse.
My comment about capturing the imagination was more about the fans being not too bothered about it because they don't give him much chance, Consequently we can't be that bothered to discuss it.
For the record, I really hope he wins and I'll be watching for sure.

I hope Smith can pull off a miracles and out point AA but in Germany he is unlikely to get a close decision so he has to win very comprehensively.

Since then he has been beaten and stopped.

I'm actually looking forward to watching this one, Paul Smith has had plenty of ups and downs, but it'd be nice for him if he can do the business in Germany. AA hasn't really done to much in terms of knockouts since moving up in division, and we know that Smith will be in top shape and will be ready to work hard for 12. If he can avoid getting caught and KOd, I wouldn't think that an Abraham win would be automatic if it goes to the cards.
