I just bought a treadmill becouse i have been fighting the weather to get my road work in. Can i replace all of my running to the treadmill or is there a benefit to running outside.

yeah, there is definately a difference.
it doesn't have the same impact as running outdoors
plus your running on a timed belt.
I'm not exactly sure why but I can run almost twice as long on a tredmill then I can out in the park

I consider myself a bit of an expert on treadmills.
Nuero physically they are not a very good idea to get fit on, what happens is the machine moves you, you do not move the machine. There in lies the problem, the metatarsals dont get the same response as you move running, therefore neither does the knee, long term it will cause injury. These injuries will be worse than the ones that your on the machine to rehab, and the muscles dont work as naturally as when you move yourself.
There are one or two other things but you get, (i hope), the general idea.

A treadmill mile is shorter than a street mile... :P
Just rap up warm when you run...![]()
thanks for the insite i had no idea that it could cause injury i was just planning on alternating some days becouse the reason i got it was becouse we were having freazing rain and sh** when i wanted to run.
Running on solid ground gives you more of a workout than does a treadmill. However, when you run on a treadmill, your willpower is tested because when you can see the time/distance you've ran in front of you, it seems to take forever. Not to mention that treadmills keep you from cheating (you can't slow down without hitting a button, whereas outside you might slow down and not know it).
If you can increase the incline on the treadmill to at least 1% to mimic road conditions. I have read that going higher can help leason the impact on the joints as well. Read it in a MensHealth magazine, you can go to their website, they have had some good articles on using treadmills. www.menshealth.com

Yeah, i agree with DMD.
I hate running outside, my calfs would always stiffen up and result in me ending up walking the rest of the way, so i would run for like 5 minutes, whereas on the treadmill i can go 30 mins non stop.
I disagree with you on this one Adam. I know people who can run a 7 minute mile. But push thereselves hard on treadmills and barely get it under 10. Bottom line:
Treadmill is longer, either that or my treadmills f u c k ed up.
Could be your treadmill is more accurate, they're all callibrated differently but most people agreee that a mile on your average TreadMill is alot easier than on the road.
The reason why a treadmill seems easier than road running is because it is. Now think about this imagine if you can, all you are basically doing is lifting the knees you are working the abductor muscles, the adductor muscles are not getting used the machine is doing that for you, these adductor muscles being the hamstrings and calves. Consiquently you have an imbalance in the muscular memory which as you can imagine causes long term problems. A lot of footballers have knee problems because of it, this has been a big problem for a long time but fortunately I have developed a machine to combat this where you can run without impact ,which trains the abductors and adductors at the same time. It also improves running gait and also makes the venus returns to the heart work 25% more efficiently. I dont want to give too much away but it should be on the market in a couple of months. Goodbye to motorised treadmills.

Actually, on a treadmill, the time starts ticking as soon as the belt starts moving. But it takes the belt a few seconds to get up to speed, so by the time the time you're running fast, 10+ seconds have already elapsed, whereas on solid ground, you can start off up to speed instantly when the time starts ticking. That's why treadmills aren't good for testing how fast you can run a mile; better for testing how long you can run.Originally Posted by KevK

Treamill is only good for two things, if it's winter or you have joint pain, other than that, run outsideOriginally Posted by lugzman
