Nigel was an animal and once that switch went on its probably a little tough to think morally. I've always found brock that the "hitting when down" is exaggerated. Most of the time its in the middle of a melee and given the nature of the sport, its a little tough to turn the switch off. Of course there are some intent some times but the adrenaline and zone effect must be hard to counter.
Imagine the old days with no standing 8 or neutral corner rule lol. Imagine Dempsey standing over you waiting for you to rise to a knee so he could nail you again![]()
Yeah them olden days sure were brutal it's amazing how long it took them to realize to give a count and to go to the neutral corner. It's a wonder there weren't more deaths in the ring with that stuff. You can see on the second knockdown in this video of the referee is trying to hold tlbenn back and he's shoving the referee out of the way and takes another shot at Barclay I think it was a little beyond the heat of the moment and personally I think that on the first incident one point should have been deducted on the second incident two points should have been and Barkley should have been given 5 minutes to recover
it happens at 3:30 and 5:50 for those who don't want to watch it all
Rocky was worse I do not know how you can say that about Benn in comparison.

Nigel Benn
Most definitely a 'free swinger'.
I don't think he was intentionally dirty. But he took it to the edge.
Definitely a rough fighter. The kinds of mentality, I'd like to see in the HW division. Dream on...
All's lost! Everything's going to shit!
I remember standing around in a crowd of afternoon drunken school buds who were all yelling the exact same thing as Benn sat on someone's shoulders and pumped his fists. Good memories this one. Truth is Benn didn't even connect while he was down on 1st kd, clear misses. Carlos Padilla seemed a bit lost also, very indecisive. Benn landed one time on 2nd kd and should have been warned or lost a point...but Barkley was going down again. I remember his interview after and lamenting "He never hurt me, but I'm not sour grapes at all" His manager jumped in and says "it wasn't an official knockdown and we're taking it to protest, the third knockdown is suspect" etc.....at which point Iran waved his hand in his face and said "I don't have no sour grapes you know, if I say a man beat me then a man beat me, but he didn't beat me maybe this was the way they felt they would win it. They got it. but hey protest or not I don't want to sound like no sour grapes or nothing like that. I just think you know, I demand a rematch, if not then no problem, if that's it I'll just hang up the gloves"
Blade carried on for many years after even at heavyweight.

@Master you have been very fair in this thread in that you possibly agree that benn was sometimes a very dirty fighter. That is enough of a fair gesture to make it quite satisfying. I appreciate that.
