    Default Knew to this site.

Yo, my name's Clint, and over the past few years I've been interested in boxing. My friends and coworkers and I box for fun every now and then, but until now I've never been interested in taking it seriously. This site looks like a good site to talk about boxing, so i figured i'd register on here.
One question, can being short be a disadvantage in the ring? (5'4", 211 lbs.) I'm also slightly overweight.

you seriously need to lose weight, the height difference would be too much to overcome with another heavyweight...
You should be a lightweight really, perhaps 135 pounds.
Are you a bodybuilder? Because you can't be 5 foot 4, 211 pounds and be slightly overweight....unless you have alot of muscle mass.

alot of it is muscle, though theres some fat as well. I may be a bit overweight, but that still don't mean I can't box tho. i've been heavyset all my life, so i probably wouldn't do so well to try to change to a lightweight. no matter what the disadvantages are, a true boxer can overcome it.

There's a heavyweight from Glendale Arizona named George Garcia, 10-0 4KO last I knew, and he is 5'9" and 257. He was also a finalist for the spot on the last US Olympic team.

Welcome to the site mate, I'm 6' 0" and 266 lbs, and I aint fat!!! Not in prime condition, but just a big guy!! Having said that at 5'4 you really would need to come down a bit if you want to be competitive.

i don't mean to be discourage you at all, but being at 5 foot 4 fighting a 6 foot guy in a boxing match is a massive disadvantage......Because you won't be able to reach him, he has the reach to outbox you easily.

Well, my advice for you is to just to join a boxing gym and see how it is....it's a pretty tough sport so just try it out and see how you like it.

and they've got something for you. knock you in the chin to keep distance. and besides, some guys are so well conditioned, that it's like hitting a tree, and it won't even phase 'em.

Any one can be hurt by a body shot if you throw it right, get your head moving and get under their jab and if your can throw down you've got them once the rings cut off.

Sounds like your writting off short people almost, tall and short both ahve pros and cons.

Welcome to the site. Its great to give boxing a go, go for it. There are advantages and disadvantages to being tall and short. As the previous guy mentioned Tyson was able to use is small height to his advantage, however, you are considerably shorter than him.

Don't let this discourage you though, boxing is a great way to get in shape, if you could get down a few weight classes all the better. Losing weight will not only let you face smaller opponents, it will also give you better mobility, which is essential to avoid punches. Other short fighters such as James Toney are able to compete at the highest level because they have excellent technique.

    Anyway, good luck
