Default Pac-Cotto does 1.25 million buys

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Manny Pacquiao is a box office hit, selling 1.25 million pay-per-views for his fight with Miguel Cotto in a performance that could set up the richest fight ever against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The fight not only made the top 10 of best-selling pay-per-view boxing events, but beat the 1.05 million figure notched by Mayweather for his September comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said Friday the fight grossed $70 million, with 650,000 buys coming from cable television homes and 600,000 from satellite television viewers. It was helped by a record 110,000 buys from Puerto Rico, Cotto’s home.

The biggest PPV fight was in 2007—Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya, which was sold to 2.4 million homes.

Not as well as we were led to believe still great numbers indeed.

Default Pacquiao-Cotto does 1.25m PPV buys

HBO have released the figures & it's less than we've been told, but still a great sign for boxing.

Anyway, I'm not really interested in what this does for Manny or Floyd's negotiations because I'm sick of talking about them, but doing that number is great for boxing as a whole

Yep this is great news, bottom line people are watching boxing!

To have two fights do over a million buys each in one year is nothing short of phenomenal.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

Yeah, this is wonderful news. I was hoping those 2 million buys reports were true but this still shows that boxing is alive and healthy. Two big million PPV buys boxing events in 2 months. Next up, the 3 million event Pac/PBF.

Yeah I really think it will touch 2.5 million buys though

I honestly thought it would be significantly more then that but oh well, it was a great fight and maybe it is just because I'm in the Bay Area. The buzz around here was much bigger for this one then the Mayweather fight. Of course people always underestimate the buying power of Mexicans who no doubt drove up the PPV buys more then we would think.

Lol, Amat nobody underestimates the buying power of Mexicans, they're the group who most boxing promoters target. People do underestimate the numbers of black people who buy fights, that's more likely what drove the PBF-JMM fight's numbers up. The Mayweather fight was far bigger amongst people I know, but then maybe that's because I don't know many Filippinos or Puerto Ricans

I'm just talking about fans in general though. Before the fight people were predicting like 400-500 thousand buys for Mayweather-Marquez, most of those attributed to Floyd's selling power, and I think the disparity is due to people underestimating how many Mexicans would buy the PPV. Not promoters, they know that's why Arum has all those Latin Fury cards.

I think it's more due to people underestimating that Floyd is crossover star, certainly in the black community. Over here people who have never shown an interest in boxing had facebook statuses about Mayweather, particularly a lot of girls. Now, if that's the black community in Britain, than it must at least be the same in the US.

Let's face it there was a lot of people predicting a poor PPV turnout for that fight based on their dislike for Mayweather. I said before that fight that it was all on him either way. If he did badly, the numbers were on him not Marquez, but the same has to go if it did well.
