Default Don King is the greatest promoter of all times

King is viewed as the devil of Boxing and people only have negative things to say about the man but I happen to think he's the greatest promoter ever in this sport..

From a fan's perspective, it's hard not to like him because when you think about all the dream PPV cards he put together in the 90s, it's unbelievable!

Those of you who were into Boxing in the 90s would know what im talking about. Kind would often stack his cards with names such as Finito Lopez, Chavez, Sweet Pea, Terry NOrris, G-man all on the same card and against good oppositions.. How often do we get that now, if ever?

NOwadays, young guys are happy to see 2 good fights on the card. THey see 2 good fights on paper and they think it's some great PPV but it's not.. fuck that shit

King also get knocked on for robbing his fighters but i have a different view on that. Fighters never seen so much money in their lives until they met Don King.. If you are dumb enough to get robbed of your own money, then it's on you!! Smarten up and get a new accountant or something...

Fuck the Don King haters.. I bet you we'll never see another promoter like him..

You are right about the stacked cards and the fact that Orlando Cruz will be on the Bradley fight show how low the game done sunk. He also did find ways to get boxers huge paydays. But by putting boxing behind a pay wall he turned off fans and hurt boxing, I'm okay with paying but it went to far.

Great fights can be made now but they are not due to personality clashes between mainly ODH and Arum. King would not care as long as it made the most amount of money. Think of the great fights we have lost? Manny v Pacquiau is the biggest.

    Agreed

    Mares vs Donaire and Mikey

    Rios vs Lucas

    Broner vs Crawford

    Rigo vs Santa Cruz

    Manny vs Golden Boy welters

    Alvarado vs Danny

Greed is good it gives us the fights we want but Bob has 200 million in the bank and sees no reason to put his ego aside to make more.

Don King cared about one thing $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
That's it. He didn't care or still doesn't care what you or anyone else thinks about him. Why else would he dress like that! He doesn't give a f$$k. And it made him a ton of $$$

Don King was a Great Boxing promoter too though.

All these promoters are shady, they have to be.

Don King's way of ripping off fighters is telling some young contender from the projects that they'll get 10 million dollars and then give them 4 or 5 million instead.

You are too generous, King was due to pay Witherspoon $1 Million for fighting Bruno, when it eventually got settled, Terrible Tim made $90,000...

But as mentioned that is but one part of a complex man. He is/was a Promotional genius, maybe deeply flawed, but still a genius.

Look at his first 'big' fight. He was pre fight in Smokin' Joe's corner, but at the end of the bout he stood alongside Foreman.

He managed to get Millions together to set up The Rumble in the Jungle, he managed to work with his main rivals when it suited (Dynamic Duo et al). This meant the likes of the late 80s Heavyweight unification could happen. Then in the 90s with his main man behind bars, he made Julio Cesar Chavez a true global superstar, with the support of some of the best bills of boxing we have ever seen.

There is of course the darker side to King, and we know that it does not get much darker than killing people...

King was though a near master of the 'dark art' of promotion.

Not everybody is okay with being robbed. Never held it against King for blasting the guy robbing him

That's the thing, King wouldn't let you. Its sign this contract right here right now or forget getting a title shot because I own all the fighters and I wont give you a shot unless you sign. King blackballed lots of guys if they didn't sign awful contracts effectively freezing them out.

I don't think theres any question hes a great promoter and a colourful character but that's not really the point when judging a mans character. When a guy like Tyson thinks a dude is a 'slimey reptilian motherfucker' you gota stand up and take notice.
