Default De La Hoya v Whitaker Reevaluated

Ok, so after a discussion with Brazilian Bomber about this fight and since it was a long time ago that I saw it I thought I'd better watch again and actually score the fight round by round. CC for the Game for getting me the fight

I said before that I didn't see how anybody could score the fight for Whitaker, well now I can , so sorry Brazilian Bomber and CC to you, it was much closer than I remembered. I actually scored the fight a draw when watching tonight - here is my card

    De La Hoya Whitaker

    9 1 10
    10 2 9
    10 3 8 (Point deducted for but)
    9 4 10
    9 5 10
    10 6 9
    10 7 9
    10 8 9
    8 9 10
    10 10 9
    9 11 10
    10 12 9

    114 - 113

I think if you were scoring more for power punches, you may give the edge to De La Hoya, if you were scoring for all punches landed, you may give the edge to Whitaker. I tried to be objective and take both into consideration

Really enjoyed the fight 2nd time round

    What's everybodies opinions ?

That if Whitaker had been in his prime he would have danced rings around DLH and made him look terrible. Pernell didn't even think he was going to win this fight, he sounded very unlike himself in the prefight comments.. Saying things like, "anyone can get caught with a big punch, there's definetly a chance I will lose this fight"... He had not been training like he once did, had been into cocaine, and in his fight prior to this one he was well behind on points to disableys hurtado... I thought DLH edged it because Pernel didn't do enough in the last 2 rounds tbo, although it took me a while to think so because Whittaker is my favourite fighter ever. Big H did you honestly think Whittaker took the 12th? If he had I would think it would be a win for him, that was the rnd that kind of swayed it for me, he didn't seem like he wanted it badly. All in all Oscar still got a boxing lesson and he didn't give Pernel a rematch. The fight was there for Whitaker to win though and he didn't quite grab it, it was no robbery.

Yeh the 12th was the hardest round to score for me, but I thought (albeit jabs) that Whitaker landed more - I could be wrong, in which case I would have given it to DLH by 1 round.

I like both of these guys and I gave the fight to Sweat Pea. Agreed though very hard fight to judge.

The thing is you gotta watch the fights with the sound off, cuz plenty of times you the listener are influenced by what the commentators are saying or something they say will stand out the most to you.
All in all it was a difficult fight to score but the 12th rd. I gave it to Oscar for the reason that he wen't out and wanted the fight as to Pernell did not engage ot was Oscar who did and I felt landed the better shots.

Not a classic, but a really interesting match of styles.

I watched again last night (with the sound off CMM ) and I had it 114-113 De Le Hoya, exactly the same scoring as above, but gave the last round to Oscar this time, I very rarely change my opinion on a fight, but this one was so difficult to score.

Thats what makes me laugh every weekend after every televised fight all the "experts" cries of robbery, poor judging, etc

Sometimes people see fights differently. Simple as. Even with the benifit of multiple views.

I think Oscar won it. Just
