Default something i dont understand about DLH vs Hopkins

their fight was made at middleweight to allow them to unify the division DLH had just won the WBO middleweight title from Sturm , a fight which he weighed in at about 160lb as did Sturm but in the hopkins fight Dlh weighed in at 155lb and hopkins 156lb what i dont get is why they weighed in this light i mean with DLH not being a natural middleweight anyway i cant see why hed want to go in at 155lb when he been 160lb in his last fight just 3 months previously

That does seem weird. The only thing I can think of is that ODLH and Hopkins were friends so maybe Oscar convinced Hopkins to drop closer to junior middle for the fight so the size difference wouldn't be that great and the fight would be fairer.

I saw the fights yesterday,I think it was a re run and Lampley explained that Oscar got a clause into the contract that B Hop had to weight below 157 I think it was. I think Oscar found it hard to make 160 this particular time.

he performed badly against Sturm imo so maybe he thought hed be better at a lower weight so maybe thats why im not trying to say this made any difference to the fight itself it just seems a little odd

Whenever I see that knockout, I always think that something fishy went down.

I thought that too but having seen 3 or 4 similar KO'es in lesser known fights,I don't think it was a dive,I just think getting hit in the liver REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY HURTS!

I've seen other liver shots and that one didn't seem hard at all. It was almost like Bernard just touched his liver. Man, if I was a boxer I just be trying to land liver shots all night.

Very true, that's what I thought,I didn't think B Hop landed it with much force but then again,I could be wrong. I just thought it was a fake(mistakingly so)because although I've seen guys go down from a liver shot,I never seen them roll around etc.

A body shot can do it....Remember when Virgil Hill went down from a Jones bodyshot....Hill has a good jaw and it was his first KO loss so it must have hurt like an SOB...

Its impossible to say unless you have taken the shot but it looked iffy to me too. The Virgil Hill one doesn't compare for me, it was a ripsnorter that took care of Hill. The one on Oscar didn't seem to land all that well and you seldom see fighters of that calibre taken out with one body shot like that. That was probably the first time in DLH's life that he was in a fight that he wasn't in control of (or thought he was in control of) in his previous loses he was still in with a chance right up until the end, this wasn't the case here. He was getting beat and there was nothing he could do to stop it. Other than maybe over egg the damage done by a seemingly innocuous shot to the body.

Like I said though, impossible to tell without being on the receiving end.

When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

De La Hoya is a natural welterweight, and I believe at that time his normal walking around weight was in the 150s or low 160s at most. So 156 was simply a natural, in-shape weight for him.
As for Hopkins, there was speculation that he came in extra-light because he was playing a sort of headgame. He wanted to come in weighing the same or less than DLH, because when he won he didn't want people to say he won simply because he was the bigger man, he wanted to be looked at as the better man.
