The "Fight Night" Curse?

People always talk about the Marciano curse... but what about the FIght Night curse? Is it just me or does it seem like every guy who gets put on the cover of the Fight Night video game series suffers misfortune immediately afterwards?

First it was Roy Jones, undefeated (well pretty much) for 15 years, the undisputed P4P king. They put him on the cover of the first game in the installment, Fight night 04. Just a few months later, out of the blue he is knocked out brutally by both Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson.

Next, they stick Hopkins, who hadn't lost in like 12 years, on the cover of their '05 installment Fight Night Rnd 2. Again, directly after the game comes out with him on the cover, his next two fights are losses to Jermaine Taylor.

Next, in 2006, they have Gatti/Ward on the cover, and immediately Gatti is stopped by Baldomir.

The cover of the Ps3 and Xbox 360 versions had De La Hoya on the cover, and he drops a decision to Mayweather.

Just a dumb observation on my part, I don't know if anyone else noticed it before. ALl I know is if I was a boxer you couldn't possibly offer me enough to be on the cover unless I was alraedy retired.

Well, it is true but most of these fighters are on here cuz they're legends... Having amassed such popularity takes years thus by the time they are of the level to be universally recognized they are normall on the downside of their career as in looking at the timeframe and the fighters, they were...

I think your theory could be something more of a symptom, rather than the sickness. There is also the madden curse and the lesser known chunky soup curse for football fans. I think these are all signs of of a larger trend. The Athletes, at the height of their popularity, get their names and faces stamped all over products and are bombarded with media opportunities for movies, radio, television, commercials, interviews, guest spots, and signings. They also take the opportunity to strike while the irons hot and push their side ventures (record labels, restaurants, gadgets, training videos).

An athlete can get stretched pretty thin. Unfortunately, what got them there is usually the first to go because its what they have been doing for the longest and their amplified ego convinces them they can do it better than anyone else even with half the training, practice and attention. The hunger tapers off and so does the focus. Next thing you know, the IRS is taking their bentley as collateral on back taxes and they are they auctioning off all their belongings.
