What made me think of this is thinking back to Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas and then thinking about Roy Jones Jr.-Antonio Tarver II.


What's more devistating to the fighter's aura and to you being a fan seeing your favorite fighter catch a beat down.


I think honestly seeing someone totally dominated is more taxing...Tyson's aura was just demolished...he had to start back at square one and he never came close to beating the calibre of opponents he beat before he lost to Douglas again.

Not saying I wasn't surprised when RJJ got KO'd but the Tarver one wasn't as bad as seeing Glen Johnson whip his ass....that I NEVER saw coming

Odds were like 40-1 in Douglas fight and Jones vs Tarver fight was a shock but odds were little more even if i remember but i agree Tyson vs Douglas was more of a shock.

Of course because Tyson had been so dominant you never saw it coming, you had to figure Roy was hurt by the weight gain and loss.


But seeing a close to Prime fighter totally shut out and blasted just leaves you in shock....it's great when you have nothing invested in either fighter it leaves you speechless but the same can be said of the comeback KO....those are always fun to watch too

Yeah Glen is the only man to ever give Roy a real beating. Tarver bet him but never bullied him around the ring like that.

I was really surprised at that....it was like it wasn't the same Roy, he wasn't flashy or throwing anything, he just stood there flat footed and didn't throw anything....it was just shocking to watch round after round of that

James Toney got dominated by Peter in their second fight but it would have been far more shocking to me had Toney got knocked out.

I think never being stopped is an aura all of its own.

Toney and Hopkins both have losses on their records but neither has ever been stopped. That gives them both an aura of toughness even though they've been beaten, in a way it makes them still undefeated.

Undefeated is obviously the best aura, but never been stopped is pretty damn good too.

Totally agree with you . Both were quality knockout punches, but Johnson's was a beautiful shot and he dished out a true beating. I remember thinking how much stronger Johnson looked than Jones. It reminded me of when a big kid picked on a little kid at school.

In retrospect you could see Tyson slipping with every fight.
The break with Rooney and to a smaller degree Teddy Atlas seemed to set the demise in motion.
With Jones however it was a true shock at the time.

Still my vote goes to the ko of Tyson(indeed a bully stripped of his aura)

one punch knockouts can be viewed as lucky punches...to be beaten up for 12 rounds is way more devestating than that..because a fighter can always tell himself that it was a lucky punch..but when you whoop his ass for 12 rounds where he couldn't do shit it makes it clear that he doesn't belong in the ring with you..think about all the guys that roy dominated for 12 rounds...none of them asked for a rematched...lennox lewis came back and beat oliver mccall and rahman because he felt they both were lucky punches....

Yeah but being knocked out twice has permanently sealed Lennox Lewis' reputation as a glass jawed champion.

If they would have been outboxed and beaten down but not stopped if anything it enhances their reputation. Sam Peter for example, a zero skill brawler but considered the toughest man in the heavyweight division.

I believe a fighter can come back from a KO loss and forge a perfectly respectable and succesful career, for example Johnny Ruiz after Tua and Marco Antonio Barrerra after Junior Jones.

However, i feel it is much more difficult to come back from having ur skills revealed to be sub standard or jus insufficient. i.e. Trinidad will not b back after Wright, Tarver will never regain his rep. after Hopkins
