    Default Monsters

We all know there are monsters in boxing that bring out the best in champions. Ali had several. Cotto is staring one in the face this week. Who are some of the best "Monsters?"

    Quarry
    Chuvalo
    Cooper
    Mercer

People who just made champions work harder than they wanted to!

BTW, I am pretty new to this forum (which is the best Boxing forum I have come across), so if this has been covered I apologize.

The guy in your pic was a monster. Marvellous Marvin was a champ in his own right tho so maybe doesnt fall into the kinda fighters u are on about.

    Ken Norton?

Norton is good, but you're right I'm thinking more of non-champs or one time champs who just hung around and made the best fighters nervous.

Point taken on Cooper, but he did give Holyfield one hell of a scare(like DMQ).

Some really good names there but I think that Briscoe is possibly the greatest fighter never to capture a title and one bad mo' fo' who took several greats to the edge and beat some.
Fighters like Benton, Manuel Rodriguez, Monzo, Auntuformoe, Valdez, Emile, Mustafa and Hagler to name a few...

Maybe Andy Ganigan, was competitive against Alexis Arguello until the kayo. Also Ganigan was named 98th in the Ring Magazine's 100 Hardest Punchers of all-time, not bad for a fighter not winning a major title

I don´t know if he qualifies as a monster, but Victor Polo had 5 straight unsuccessfull shots at the world title, which must be close to a record. And in the first four he gave the champions absolute fits and came short of winning by the slimmest margins until JMM finally beat him convincingly

I was at Mandalay when JMM beat Polo it was on the undercard of JLC-Corrales I.
JMM displayed a brilliant arsenal of counter punching and precise movement to offset Polo the whole night.

Here's the picture I took with JMM after the fight. I remember talking to him for a minute and I aksed him how he felt about the fight. He said Polos punches were more grazing him but he could still feel Polo making contact.
He also said he thought he fought well and kept Polo at the end of his punches...
