first of all its just a sparring match so your not in any danger of being seriously injured, you'll just be trying to find your range and get the feel of the ring. if you have a longer reach than your opponent, a significantly longer reach, then keep the jab popping without hesitence. im short and stocky so i barely ever have a reach advantage but i use a simple technique to put my opponent off balance "catching". the way it works is you wait for your opponents jab and push his left glove down with your right glove(if your both orthodox) a few inches and counter. this is not parrying because parrying is a much eggagerated version of this technique. how old are you?

    anyway, good luck!!!!

2 weeks and you're getting in the ring already? That seems too soon to me.

I think it would be smarter to stay out of the ring, and develope your skills until they become habit on the bags and mirror. Do some half speed shadow boxing sessions in the mirror. My prediction is that the little bit of boxing that you've learned in two weeks, will be thrown out the window once the first punch is thrown. It's gonna be a wild match with wide shots. That's just what I've seen when guys get in there too quick.

Let us know how it goes though.

    2 things:
1: sparring at 2 weeks is fine, i sparred my first ever lesson
2: there is nothing you can work on my friend, the idea of sparring is it identifies your weaknesses and improves your assets.
enjoy and take it easy, and remember your gonna get what you give.
if you go in all guns blazing and try to kill him hes gonna hit you back hard, but if you go in and tecnically spar, he will probs do the same.

good luck and enjoy, sparring is the best bit about training!

Same i sparred my first ever lesson, to get a feel of my skill level. A good thing to remember when sparring, is the situations, what punches your opponent hits you with, snapping your jab, all the little bits. Of course its natural to throw everything out of the window, you will get hit of course and may not be used to this. But the best advice i can give you is to slow down and keep your hands up. Also go through the old posts on 'Ask the Trainer' there is ample information on the little things that make a good boxer

The only advice I can give (and I'm no expert) is to make sure your fit enough and dont spar for too long.

A few years back (when I was 14) I decided to challenge my friend to a 12 three minute round sparring match using roughly 75% of power in our punches. We both decided I won on points having knocked him down in one round but he demanded a rematch a few weeks later which we both decided he won. I never trained for these matches and I'll tell you something......I've never been so tired in my life! lol It really takes it out of you. You should have saw us trying to breathe during the breaks!

Back to my point...... make sure you think your fit enough to do it, and dont start off with 12 rounds! lol

It sounds like you are talking about the show "The Contender"

    so how'd it go?

I didnt read everyone's posts before i decided to wait, 2 weeks from this friday.... i wanted to make sure, as someone else posted, that i wont get burnt out, i did workouts with my friends trainer (he's 19 yrs old) and at the end of the workout i could lift my hands barely, i felt like i wanted to throw up.... after we were done i told him and he said it is good to throw up, and its normal for begginer boxers..... well anyways, after the sparr ill let u guys know how it went, oh by the way im 14 yrs old, will be 15 in 1 month

    good luck man
make sure you both know what kind of sparring session your in.
so talk and decide how its gonna be (technical spar, full spar).
it is advisable to keep with technically spar as Alex noticed further back.

make sure you have fun and LEARN during this session cuz that is what it's all about.
some people think it is to knock the other persons head off and prove something.
but this will only bring them down as other people will knock their head off.

so just relax in the ring and concentrate on speed is the key

    hope this helps
