    Thumbs up Nanaimo Boxing Club

In the news section of the site, I was pleased to see some information on the
Nanaimo Boxing Club in Nanaimo, BC, Canada concerning a May 2008 card.

The club was formed in 1971 and I was one of the co-founders.
It replaced an earlier club called the Newcastle Boxing Club
under the leadership of the late George Nepper, and trainer Harry Pollet
When the club was started in 1971 some of the initial gear was
donated by Mr. Nepper from the old club.

Over the years the club has changed locations a number of times.

Of interest, the first location was the result of a project in Ucluelet, BC
during the summer of '71 during the building and developing a seaside park called
    He-Tin-Kis (but that's another story).

Of interest, the other co-founder and myself both had an opportunity to meet Muhammed Ali in Vancouver before the boxing club was formed.

It is great to see timely stories pro and amateur from various locations
    around the Globe.

    Question Re: Nanaimo Boxing Club

How do you know about the Nanaimo Boxing Club.

The club was started in 1971.

Over the years there have been many changes in coaches and locations.

It replaced the Newcastle Boxing Club which operated between 1963 and 1968.

The Nanaimo Boxing Club like many long running clubs has an interesting history,
but the current members likely are not aware about those early days of 1971 to 1974.

Following my involvement with the club, I helped revive boxing in Victoria, BC
A club called the London Boxing club would be changed with the formation of
the Victoria Athletic Association in 1976.

    London Boxing Club
    Victoria Athletics Boxing Club
    Victoria Jaycees Boxing Club

    the Capital City Boxing Club.

    Duncan/Crofton
Crofton Boxing Club (oprtated in the Eighties

    Ladysmith Boxing Club
Operated for a number of years in the Eighties.
Formed in October 1982 by Bill Cox, Dave Alton, Dave Stone and
    Rick Brough.

Its first fight card took place on December 11, 1982
with boxers from Ladysmith, Crofton, Parksville and Nanaimo.
Officials came from Victoria, Nanaimo and Ladysmith.
Featured eleven bouts with Scott Cessford of Parksville
    defeating Lloyd Anderson of Nanaimo.

Other clubs operating in the Eighties were:

I've been going to the Capital City gym (again, just for exercise) for the past month or so, I really like it.

That's cool that you are going to Capital City. I understand that
Chris Jones is now involved in the amateur boxing program at
Capital City. It would be nice if all the clubs on Vancouver Island
could take a page out of the past to organize some all Island tournaments.
