Firstly how the hell is Berto gonna get down to 140 ? when he has fought as high as a Jr Middleweight ? and secondly why does he want move down to 140 anyway ?

Well, I don't know the validity of the statement, but if he COULD get down to 140 it's a division he would dominate. There is very little chance he could be lineal WW champ anytime in the near future. I am interested to see if this is true, because I see very little body fat on him now, can't imagine him making 140 very easily.

I don't think it's a smart move to move to another division when the one you're at is one of the best in boxing.

I think they're trying to protect Berto. They don't want to put him in the ring with any of the big boys just yet. Fighting Paulie would put another name on his record without putting Berto in danger.

Its a much better division for him, can't see him beating Williams, Mayorga or Cotto really.

He doesn't look like a huge welter to me. If he could make it comfortably it would be a good decision.

140 is weaker than 147 so (if true) he doesnt fancy the other champions at 147.

If this rumour is true, and chances are it isn't, BUT...

He should develope himself in the division he's already in. Who cares if HBO won't telecast some of his fights, they will get back to him when he's prospered.

But boxing's boxers are just as bad as promoters, they want money and the center stage.

I for one think he can take out Paul Williams right now, BUT he should continue to develope his skills and relaxation inside the ring, so he'll DEFINITELY be ready for anyone in the ropes.

The story is from Dan Rafael's notebook today at ESPN.COM/Boxing. Bertos promoter said that he would willing to go to 140 for the right fights. Berto weighed in his last fight at 143.

Ive never, ever heard of a champion in a division stacked with good/great fighters move DOWN in weight to a poor division that has one real name.

Unless the $$ of a potential Hatton bout has blinded him i say hes running.

It's probably not even his choice, I think his manager or promoter realizes he won't be able to beat Margarito for awhile, and wants to create some hype by making him the champion of a division, that being I think they should have more faith in him, he will do very well in the WW division.

I'm sure you know more about his ability and potential than his promoters and trainers. You're a boxing genius. Berto has still yet to beat a single good quality true WW. He's been very carefully matched. He has the potential to be a special fighter, but if he can make 140, by all means he should do it. There is no way he's going to be the top man at WW in the next two years, but he might be able to be the top man at 140 in that time frame.

If Berto gets in with Clottey, Cotto, Margo, or even Cintron, the step up in class is too much to expect him to overcome. His best win was against a B-level blown up LWW. Forbes was a perfect step up for him to take on the top LWWs. At WW the two stepping stone fights for him would be Collazo or Quintana. If he drops down, he could fight Tim Bradley, then the Hatton/Paulie winner. I would give him a good chance in those fights, a better chance than I would give him over any of the top full sized WW's.
