    Default British v. American Rivalry

Given the Calzaghe v. Jones fight this weekend, I thought discussion of the subject is timely.

When did the British v. American boxing rivalry originate? I assume in the bare knuckles era.

    How strong is it?

As a British or American citizen, are you more likely to root for a fighter from your country?

For example, with exceptions of course, I've found many British fans are critical of Kelly Pavlik and many American fans are likewise critical of Joe Calzaghe.

I couldn't care less where a fighter is from. Either I like them or I dont.

I will always want a British fighter to win over a foreign fighter, American or not. Whether I expect them to win or not is another matter.

Thats the way it should be IMO, just my opinion of course before certain parties get their knickers in a twist.
When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

If Toney fights Haye I would like to see Toney knock him out.
Calzaghe fights Jones, I want to see Jones laid out square.

Its about the fighters all the way for me.

Well thats a no-brainer of course the USA is. But there about 100x bigger than our country. But i think us Brits haven't been doing to bad in the last few years, although we've had a few bad results lately.

Im English and im rooting for RJJ, boxing to me isn't about country vs country. Its about individual tastes, RJJ was one of my idols growing up and i loved his style thats why im rooting for him. I respect Joe Calzaghe as a fighter but i can't really get into his style.
